Some of you may remember the stray I took in back in September - Martha. She came in with some bad injuries including old and badly infected bite wounds around her neck. These seemed to heal with a protected course

Re: Non-healing wound

I'd agree with a C and S swab for MRSA had a cat with a collar wound, that kept breaking down wounds looked very similar. O wouldn't let us swab and eventually signed the cat over to us. Did a swab and came back + for MRSA took a while to heal, but on the right AB's lots of body dressings we finally got the wound to heal, and she is a much happier cat living with our ANA.

Re: Non-healing wound

It does matter which one, has to have a high UMF (unique manuka factor) and this will be on the label, (between 10-20+, the higher the better, the higher the UMF the more expensive...). The dressings need to be changed frequently initially, in some cases up to three times a day (exudate dependant). I spread the honey onto a sterile gauze swab using a sterile knife, just like putting it on toast! As it is very viscous and hard to spread onto/into a wound. Make sure the amount on the swab slightly overlaps the wound. About 1 Tbs honey to a 5cm wound. A waterproof dressing (Primapore/ Opsite) type dressing for a patch or bandage if on a limb.

I have only seen it used once (the Manuka honey, though I am not sure if it makes a difference which one) and it healed up an open wound with staph infection in a dog that had had it without it healing properly (or appearing to improve then breaking down again) for about three months with virtually all of the treatments mentioned above having been tried.

Re: Non-healing wound

Any news how it is going?

Re: Non-healing wound

Def agree with culture/sensitivty esp for MRSA.

As soon as i read your post that was the first thing that sprung to mind....esp with the manky discharge and reopening/failure to heal.Just to add even though she is very bright and happy doesnt mean it isnt infected with something.....all the cases we have seen of mrsa the dogs are very bright and happy!

Re: Non-healing wound

We see loads of manky wounds dealing with wildlife. To be fair Martha is enjoying her new happy life and spends much of her time making deep and interesting excavations in my garden, rolling in grass and so is often covered with dirt and mud that contamination could be a problem. Tried to keep her clean for a swab last week but failed dismally - her little face when she starts a new hole prevents me from stopping her! Guess thats poor owner compliance for you.

I do try to keep it covered when she is out and up to no good, but she has enlisted the boys dogs to help her remove any dressings.

Re: Non-healing wound

[quote user="Hannah Jones RVN A1"]

Have tried Dermisol,Fuciderm, Bactroban etc but although we see a inital response to treatment change (in about 48 hours), the wound/lesion soon reverts back to the same state. Will try honey as suggested as not used that yet. Fingers crossed.

how long is she 'off' the treatment before the wound breaks down again? - only asking as it might be worth keeping her on the tx for like a few weeks (up to vet obviously) After it's healed - just to be sure she's had a wide range of tx...?

Re: Non-healing wound

Have any swabs been taken for culture and sensitivity also maybe worth an MRSA swab?

Re: Non-healing wound

Have tried Dermisol,Fuciderm, Bactroban etc but although we see a inital response to treatment change (in about 48 hours), the wound/lesion soon reverts back to the same state.
