As some of you know I'm now unofficially the new head nurse as staff have left recently and my company won't employ an RVN & i've been there the longest (14mths)...we've just hired a guy to start training with us next September.
i standby what i said, about he student being as good as the coach etc, as if he has never been taught the standards expected from him, how can you assume he really knows how important these standards are. if he has worked else where then it is up to the current coach to raise the standeard to that of the current practice.
Im sorry but i disagree with this comment. Some people are taught things a certain way, but still do not do things the way they were taught. Like it has gone in one ear and out of the other, this should not be a reflection of the coach doing the teaching!

As a nurse trainer / coach myself, i find some people rather more difficult to train than others. Sometimes you have to spend alot more time and sometimes this pays off, but some people just dont listen and dont want to be taught.

I also do not think anyone should really have to be taught how to put rubbish in the bin, this should be something that comes naturally, and agree with a previous poster that a new person should want to give a good impression and tidying up after yourself is a good way to start.

Re: New Starter in Work

i'm sorry, but if you post on an open forum, you are open to the thoughts of the community.

harsh as it isounds, i would be very unhappy if i found out someone was discussing me on an open forum, the fact that he is male has nothing to do with it.

i standby what i said, about he student being as good as the coach etc, as if he has never been taught the standards expected from him, how can you assume he really knows how important these standards are. if he has worked else where then it is up to the current coach to raise the standeard to that of the current practice.

i never said that he had been trained that way by the original poster, but that the behaviour needs correcting, and how it is being managed now is the problem.

i don't feel that i need to post 'anon' as i'am not afraid to say what i think.

and as for being 'nice' , it's not 'nice' what has been said about the person involved.

THANK YOU!xxx

I am praising him. I am supporting him. I'm not being horrible to him and he assures me he's happy so far. I've said from the beginning to all of my colleagues, the nurses, that if i get stressed and start being a t**t i want them to tell me because i cannot abide those types of people that berate staff all the time. It's not constructive and causes unpleasant and therefore inefficient working atmospheres! I stand by this. I really just want to make it clear again that i only wanted a whinge because i'm extremely stressed and mess does not help.

Thank you to those of you who have supported me here in respect of this thread having become a battering page. I appreciate it. I can understand some people's comments. But some people have really taken this thread as an opportunity to berate and that's unprofessional. I assumed people on here would understand more given the field we're in.

It sounds like your doing a wonderful job and you approach it how YOU see fit. And I do think this thread has got very bitchy and nasty. A forum is where you can let off steam and ask for advice and it seems to me thats all she was doing. My only worry is if he would see it. But their is no need to attack the poor girl. A similar thing happened to me a few months back, it got very personal on here and I have only just started coming back on as it really upset and annoyed me. I think everyone should just have a read through what they have put before posting it! As we all have a difference in opinion but attacking a girl who already sounds quite stressed out isn't the most kindly thing to do. I think this forum is about everyone pitching in and helping out anyone who has something that they need advice on, not pointing fingers and telling them what their doing wrong. I love this forum but it really does annoy me when people can't see how far their going as some people may dwell on bad comments. Above all Stella, you do what you feel is best, point it out to him and let us know how you get on hun!

Re: New Starter in Work

How about one general anon profile? That we all know the password to, and we can all use as and when necessary?

wont this just encourage more annonymous bitching? How about as professionals we all behave like professionals and think when we are posting a) who might be reading it and b) who our comments might hurt. This thread has really annoyed me.

For the record I have not accused anybody of being nasty to anybody else, all I did was point out that what was being said about an individual may well be read by that individual at a later date - which then resulted in some fairly nasty comments by others.

Stella I appreciate you have a difficult job on your hands - both as a trainee yourself trying to do well and pass exams but also as a stand in head nurse again trying to do your best by everybody but making the comments that started this thread is not the way a head nurse (even a stand in with little experience) should be behaving. I appreciate you still have a lot to learn -and hopefully from some of the comments you have received you may learn something from this thread. Its always better to have the staff you are working alongside on your side, give them a hard time and believe me they will make your life hell.

a week and a bit is not a long time in the scheme of things for somebody to settle in and know where everything is kept, learn a new routine for a particular practice and do everything they need to be doing in super quick time. Learning to do things in the way a particular practice wants takes time - rush things through in the early days or make it difficult for somebody to settle in (even inadvertantly) and it can wreck working relationships for a long time to come. How long did it take you to get the hang of things when you started there?

Think of how long it has taken to fill this vacancy and how if you spend a bit of time and a little encouragement this person can help to ease your workload. If he was to get fed up and leave you would be back to square one. Treat him right and he could turn out to be a really strong ally treat him wrong - and he could be your worst nightmare.

You are both trainees and you could both be helping each other so much AND learning from each other - how about you give it a try.

And for those making comments on untidyness and laziness when you have never met the person or indeed worked with them I would imagine you wouldnt be very happy if somebody was to do the same to you?

So thats all I have to say really

this could equally apply to many of us at different times in our working lives - be gracious and learn from the mistakes, quit the 'sniffy' comments when we screw up, accept that sometimes we will make mistakes and lets move on!
I take it you Iam one of the ones you are referring to about the untidy/lazy thing? No I havent met him, but Ive met a lot like him, and theres no danger of anyone saying that about me because I am not lazy or untidy! I value my job too much and respect my workmates too much aswell to leave them to tidy up after me. Everyone is always so worried about hurting peoples feelings nowadays, when I first started working many moons ago you did your job or you were shown the door! but at the end of the day he is getting paid to do a job and thats what he should do and not leave everyone else to pick up after him, as I said befor its not rocket science!

SORRY!! I do feel quite guilty, you're obviously under a lot of pressure and probably didn't deserve what this thread had to offer. My point about teaching him was implied only as you had said that he only started a week ago. I am not in your shoes and I don't know the situation but it just doesn't seem like a very long time for a first year trainee to 'get it'.

I think (as someone said earlier) that he might be a charcter that finds it really hard to take criticism from someone who is also not yet qualifed, regardless of experience. It is a bit of a touchy and sensitive subject at the moment after all.

You seem to have so much responsibility ony our shoulders at the moment and it frankly isn't acceptable, but it might be that you are expecting too much from this guess, and I don;t think anyone can blame you for wanting someone to come in and help you out, but maybe if you removed that status from him and treat him just like a complete novice, then you might get along workwise a bit better.

This obviously won't help your situation though and you need to organise a meeting with the people higher up than you to sort it out. Bring up the fact that you are also a student and being required to show a new employee and student is unacceptable, then you need to get them on board to help show this guy how it is all done. Maybe he'll respond better to authority.

Having said all of this, the guy maybe just not cut out for the job but that's a chance that he needs to be given.

Sorry again for any accusing comments previously :)

Re: New Starter in Work

Hey All

'Be supportive of him, teach him the right way to do things and if it
doesn't pay off and he doesn't respond then it is time to have words
about his laziness and untidiness.'

I am doing all of this. I have given him chance to tidy up etc.

None of us have a Clinical Coach as yet as our Assessor left and our new vet needs to undertake the clinical coach training which on Monday. We're not even on the NPL yet!!

Also, i think i did mention that he has already done his first year of the NVQ2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And lastly...i have NOT slagged him off! I basically wanted some advice because i was frustrated BECAUSE i have been given no choice but to take on all these responsibilities since 2 staff have left....one of which was our head nurse...i KNOW i'm shouldn't be doing all of this...i DON'T want to do it but i have to...i don't get any extra money for it but i want him to improve more quickly because i'm under so much strain and all the shit will come down on my head!!!!!

Like Tracy said: I only wanted a rant and some advice....i will think twice before posting on here ever again.....if i ever do...thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: New Starter in Work
Regardless of what he has done, If I found out that a senior member of staff had been discussing my behaviour on a public forum I would be seriously pissed off and would probably complain to someone higher up.
I wholeheartedly agree. I have to admit it's unprofessional to be discussing such issues, and if I were him, I would not be amused.

There are ways and means of sorting such problems and discussing them on a public forum is not one of them.
Personally if I was in the same situation as him I would find it hard to work under someone who is in theory at the same level as myself.

And I think it is wrong that you have put into a Head Nurse position when you have only just started your 2nd year at college.

It must be hard for the poor lad moving to an area where he prob knows not many people at all. I know I have done it in the past and felt like giving up and moving back home at one point.

Also I do think us guys do get a raw deal in practice girls tend to be in their packs and have known them to gang up on us and that is from 1st hand experience!

I have to agree with Nick on this one also.
I also agree that everyone needs to be given a chance as he is a trainee then he is supposed to learning the acquired skills to become a good vet nurse, namely tidiness, he is not supposed to know it all already.

I am sure when we all started we all got flustered, left things unfinished as someone had asked us to do something else. Multitasking and finishing one job before starting another are all things we learned along the way.

Be supportive of him, teach him the right way to do things and if it doesn't pay off and he doesn't respond then it is time to have words about his laziness and untidiness.
