The reason for this post - make sure you have an escape route (and an alternative escape plan) in case of emergency. The reason I ask is because if you pay rent or your wage is lower because of the flat (benefits in kind) you are classed as a tenant and as a tenant you have more rights, the Landlord (ie whoever owns the building) now has to ensure that there is a working fire alarm/smoke detector installed in their property.

The non working fire alarm is a Health and Safety issue - if you were to be inspected by the fire brigade - which ok is unlikely - the chances are somebody would be in big trouble.

Re: fire drill

on the case of fire drills, we do not have a fire alarm at work, we do have a base for one but its broken because its under a leaky ceiling so is always getting wet. if a fire is discovered then our precautions is to just shout fire, i have asked for a couple of fire alarms to be fitted but they always just say we are looking into it. i do worry about this as we have had 1 fire drill since i have worked in the practice and i was in the flat upstairs so didnt hear anything, it was only after 20mins later that someone came upstairs moaning at me that i missed the fire drill and id be dead by now!! im sure this is illegal but not certain adn i have asked and asked about getting at least a couple of fire alarms, i have tried to do something my self as i brought a couple of cheap fire alarms and asked my OH to fix them up for me but bosses got very annoyed because OH was not insured to do that job.

Re: fire drill

we had to change our fire drill recon spot last year as we realised that yep we had escaped the potential fire all ourside nice and safe, apart from the fact we were all stood next to the big gas cylinders whoops

Does this mean that your flat has a lot of smoke damage if so who will replace things and will you have to be moved to a new flat?

Stay low in a fire go on all 4s it keeps you out of the smoke just crawl fast. When l am above ground floor l always look for emergency exits and decide what window l can get out of, if mattresses can be pushed out to land on, sheets tied to make a rope etc.

Re: fire drill

we are all ok - just posted as a warning to others

Re: fire drill

Good advice Sal!
