I happened to meet ex boss today in town- I smiled and ex boss immediately turned to face the wall rather than meet my eyes!

Absolutely! But there are some petulent employers out there! I had one boss, who actually told me he couldn't see any valid reason why anyone would leave his employ unless they were having a family!

I had a boss who was really off with me when I handed in my resignation which I found really upsetting and made me want to leave even more. I ended up asking to have a talk with him so I could explain exactly why I was leaving and to thank him for everything the practice had done for me. He was better after that and I was a lot happier but it still made me feel bad about leaving which wasn't nice.

that seems to be the norm sadly. I had one boss who did this for the two months prior to me handing in my notice as well and then dared to say I had let them down by leaving - cant imagine why I would want to leave such a wonderful place ?

Thanks guys for your help. Handed it in yesterday and all went ok. The manager was actually really nice about- very surprised.

We are given a form to fill in when we leave asking about the reasons why we are leaving. I will be honest without being unprofessional- you never know where vets/ managers might pop up.

Look on google. They have loads of templates. I have handed in my resignation twice this year and on both occasions I kept it short and sweet. Then spoke to my bosses about why I was leaving and to thank them for what they had done for me.

I really wish alot more places would do this .... surely it's in their interests to find ot reasons why and then be able to do something about it. Most vets have just ignored me for most of the notice period, in that mature kind of way...........

[/quote] As far as I recall I just put that I wished to resign,giving the relevant notice period and confirned my actual leaving date. Didnt go into anything other than that.

I usually just put the basics.

I am writing to inform you of my intention to resign from my current position.

Please accept this letter as 1 months* notice, which will make my leaving date .......

Add other details if you feel ts necessary, a thank you, I suppose, as Gillian said. On my last resignation letter, I wrote a detailed account of all the issues I had, as I was very upset at the time and thought I should be honest about why I couldn't stay there. I then binned this response! I didn't think it would get anyone anywhere, except cause bad feeling. I just wrote that I am sure you are aware of my reasons for leaving, but if you wish to discuss them with me, I will be happy to talk to you.

As long as you are polite and get the info out, I don't think it matters!

Just say that you are resigning your position at the practice and your requested leaving date is........(after any remaining holidays are included.)

You don't need to add any comments - but it would probably be nice to say thank-you for their help with your training and that you wish the practice well for the future. Also, you don't have to give a reason for leaving but if you intend to, make sure it is simply something like 'progression of your career' or ' rota that will be better for me' - nothing that could be taken offensively!

I really wouldn't be negative at all - they may be contacted for a reference one day. And you never know.....

Don't forget that the letter is binding - they may not allow you to change your mind.
