My mothers neighbours dog has been diagnosed with a liver problem and the owner was concerned that she had caused it by using mouthwash diluted. Not sure how high its liver parameters are, the dog has also had a ultrasound scan, Will try and find out more. I'm not sure how long she has been using the mouthwash but its poss that a vet nurse advised her that she could.

Re: Mouthwash being used in dogs

yes I noticed that - we figured because the owner had no idea how many of these mints he was giving - was certainly more than 1 pack a day it was safer to just tell him none at all.

Re: Mouthwash being used in dogs

Virbacs Vet Aquadent also contains Xylitol - the fact a small amount is put in drinking water obviously ensures a safe amount is given.

Re: Mouthwash being used in dogs

wouldnt advise a human one - xylitol and also alcohol unless they have looked for an alcohol free. I have known the owner of a mastiff use it and we did manage to get him to stop but by then I think the dog was hooked on Listerine - so then he went onto breath mints because the stuff we gave him didnt smell as good! we just couldnt get the message through to him NO xylitol, until one day the vet asked him how much did he want to kill his dog?

Re: Mouthwash being used in dogs

no, not heard anyone offer this advice.

But we stock a pet mouthwash called vet aquadent. you just put it in the dog / cats drinking water at the correct dilution. not sure what it consists of though.

At a previous practice i worked at we used to use a human mouthwash diluted in our dental machine water for scale & polish, but think we could only use a specific one because of the ingredients.
