I simply cant afford to on what I get paid and because my boss only gives us all temporary contracts( the trainees only get one until they are qualified) she told me this evening( while working a 48hr shift as tomorrows nurse cant get in due to snow so I have to stay) that she is not renewing it at the end of december as she has to pay me and is replacing me with a student from the college because she doesnt have to pay her!!

I think this is unfair, but there is nothing I can do as she was involved in setting up the new training so knows what she can and cant do.

I also wonder how many other people in the same circumstances are going to find themselves out of a job.

this is my take on this on the information that is here.

The original poster has a temporary contract which is not being renewed at the end of the contract term - therefore this is not a true redundancy so redundancy help in this instance wouldnt apply?

( temporary contracts are actually a sneaky way of limiting any rights the employee has - more commonly found in industrial and manufacturing). I have worked temp contracts in food factories - 6 months or whatever term and you are gone or renewed for another 6 months, it means the employer never has to pay a redundancy it protects the employer from ending up with staff they then have to pay off it also means that they have a constant choice of employees. The good news from the employees point of view is that if they find themselves unfortunate enough to be in a position where they cannot find work because they have worked to the end of their contract they should be entitled to JSA - which is little consolation I know

Ah yes, I see now. I read the post wrong! I did think though that depending on how long the contract was (albeit temporary) the rights afforded to the employee changed.

i am the same age as you and i have completed the ana, i am starting college one day a week with abbeydale vetlink in monmouthshire, and working in my practice but they have come to a training agreement where i have to pay back x amount dependant upon time spent in practice. We also have a student nurse who does 3 days a week with us unpaid and 2 days in college. i would look into your contract of employment and speak with your employer to see if you could come to some sort of arrangment.

sorry folks but if you are on a limited contract and employer is not renewing contract at end of contract term then yes they can do just that, and furthermore as the employer in this case has been very involved in setting up the new qualification and is probably extremely savvy on employment law this is probably a taster of things to come in other practices too once other employers cotton on.

I am going to do a mystic meg and gaze into the future through the fog that has descended over nurse training and predict that there are going to be some extremely unhappy students out there - even more unhappy than there are now

Re: I have lost my job due to new nurse training!!

[quote user="vickylianne"]

I know that this is something you may not want to hear but from what I can see it is the practice that is at fault in this situation, not the new award. Yes, I agree that perhaps the prospect of a 'free' student veterinary nurse must have been appealing to your boss, however, she could have taken 'free' student nurses with the old NVQ system. The only difference with the new qualification is that RVN's and MRCVS's who wish to be responsible for training nurses within a practice no longer have to hold the Assessor's award. Instead it is Clinical Coach training (much more straightforward) that people must undertake and the lengthy portfolio has been replaced by a much less time consuming Nursing progress log. Hence there are now practices who would not have taken students before offering placements and other practices who are now taking multiple students.

I really do feel for you in this situation, at the end of the day the student's your boss is intending on offering placements to are there to learn, they are not experienced 'fully fledged' members of staff and are certainly not there to provide free labour. I am sure that you are an asset to her practice, having have spent a length of time already working there and there really is no comparison for experience. I find it shocking that practices find it acceptable to treat their staff as disposable commodities. What I have seen myself are practices offering placements and still continuing to offer employment to their current staff. At the end of the day a placement student should never be a replacement for a member of staff.Sorry to go on!

Overall my first impression of the new award is generally positive, the focus in practice is now on enabling students to become competent at set skills rather than writing reams and reams (like i just have!) on how they would do something and grabbing cases and writing them up 'just because they happen to come in' before the student is actually competent.

Please do not let this bad experience put you off nursing! No two practices are the same. In all honesty you are probably much better off in another practice where they will appreciate you and what you have to offer them!

I just don't think they designed the course very well at all, I really don't think they have made it very accessible to people slightly more mature or experienced or not being funded by the bank of mum and dad.

Don't get me wrong, I have every respect for someone who has managed to get a placement, bloody high five to you!! I just don't think the whole thing is right. It alienates those of us who work in the vn field but are not given the chance. And without being big headed I'm a f**king good nurse.

Re: I have lost my job due to new nurse training!!

[quote user="icklesal"]

Its not just kids who are doing the new nursing course you know, Im 27 and am not going to give up after 5mins. Please dont assume its only 'kids' doing the new training. Ive waited 10 years to do my training and am actually getting some funding for it. Not sure how it all works but its possible because i have it. So for me, the new training is a good thing. Ive tried and tried to get a training position in a tp and i couldnt get one, now the changes have come about im able to train. I can understand alot of what you are all saying but, for some of us, its not a bad thing. I agree the whole vn training system is mental and rediculously hard to get into and because of that alot of fantastic nurses are not able to train. Im just grateful that i can FINALLY get my qualification.

Just wanted to add, im sorry you have lost your job. What a c**p situation for you. I can understand why you would be hating the new training system.

I am in exactly the same position, I had to defer my year in September as I have to pay for it. So I am due to start my 3 year training in September. It is going to be hard. I have to get a voluntary two day placement, have a days college, have time to study and do a part time job so my bloke isn't paying completly for everything. Would love to know how you got funding though. I was told the only way would be for me to be on working tax credits, which I am not. But you are right, it's terrible that you have lost your job. A lot of people are upset by the change but for me it has helped. As their are no training positions in my area available at all. I will just be so happy when I qualify at the age of 31!

This is such a shame and really dishearteneing to realise that actually you aren't going to be the only one in this situation.

The new system seems to be isolating trainees who can both afford to and have sufficient time to partake in this length of study. Through this, we are obviosuly loosing some great individuals from the profession.

I agree that the qualification should still remain at 2years then every nurse should have the chance to build onto their basic qualification what they would like in the particular area they are interested in. But lets just get some nurses qualified to start with and make it a simple process that can be accessed by all!
