You get beef, chicken, lamb, tuna, salmon etc, and in the posh brands things like duck, pheasant, venison and god knows what...
But not one single cat food brand seems to do pork.
I did wonder

Re: A really random cat food question!

Well, I mean, obviously not as interesting as Bengal cats of course!

Re: A really random cat food question!

Veggie opinion! Is it just that pork (in its unadulterated form, not salty bacon or seasoned sausages)is just a pretty bland, fatty meat? I mean, in a consumer-perception sense. Betcha it has nothing to do with the availability of the other meats, also betcha that a lot of "lamb" flavoured foods are about 10% lamb and the rest chicken or something.

A little story for you now (I know you all want to hear this) I'm from New Zealand and because of the relative availablity and lowish cost of beef and lamb in NZ vs chicken, where your pet foods are bulked out with chicken (as above) ours are often bulked out with beef / lamb.

In NZ when we do our allergy testing its amazing how many animals are found to be sensitive to B+L but not chicken, which I find to be somewhat (but not always) reversed here.

Interesting, no?

Re: A really random cat food question!

Morris was a rescue he is a blue rossetted but his markings have become a lot less distinct since he was neutered - he is a huge cat even when he isnt overweight.
he is a very bad example of a blue bengal - to me he is just a moggy with attitude and an ever empty belly

[/quote]

you found a blue bengal?! Very cute! Most breeders I know like to "hide" this throw-back in the gene pool....it's a bit like the long-haired gene, frowned upon! Used to have a blue long-haired girl at the breeder's place I worked in, called her powder puff The long haired bengals were so fluffy as kittens, didn't see what was wrong with it, but it didn't fit the GCCF breed standards......

Bengal colours are:
Brown (black) spotted
Brown (black) Marble
AOC-eyed snow marble
AOC-eyed snow spotted (AOC - any other colour, like green, yellow etc)
Blue-eyed Snow Marble (used to be hard to breed these!)
Blue-eyed Snow Spotted

They now have Silver bengals since I left the breeders/showers circle. I'm assuming they also come in spots and marbles (never say they are "tabbies" will hunt you down ) but I'm not sure I really like those. I miss the gold flecks in the coat when the light, and of the silvers I've see, they looked ticked. Fail on the showbench for a brown bengal!

Originally the bengal was "meant" to look like the asian leopard cat, ALC's are gourgous (got to handrear a few!) and have a wild attitude, would never stay tame unfort. They wanted the wild face/body with a domestic attitude! Hahahaha!

I have 1 Brown spotted girl, mated her to a brown marble and only had 1 kitten....a blue eyed snow marble! Both parents carried snow, but was not expecting that! His markings are very dark and his eye colour never changed. Never registered him tho as his mum ate her paperwork meaning I couldn't put her into my name!

I love Bengal cats and thier attitudes. At home, my 2 are so tame, will sit on your lap for a cuddle (don't like to be picked up tho) They are chatty at times, used to play fetch, my boy walks on a harness. But in the vets....I had to go in to clean my cat out when he was an inp, has to be crushed even for his yearly jab, and must be sedated to do anything with. Although for some strange reason he likes travelling to and from the vets, and even settles down and is friendly (as long as your not man-handling him or have a needle in your hand)
My female isn't so bad, she just grumbles under her breath, but you can vaccinate her like a "normal" cat.

Wow, I've gone well off topic

Re: A really random cat food question!

he is a very bad example of a blue bengal - to me he is just a moggy with attitude and an ever empty belly

Re: A really random cat food question!

Aww, he's very handsome!
It is often claimed pork (and ham, bacon etc) shouldn't be given to cats. In fact pork products are used in pet-foods - sometimes this appears on the label ("Chicken and Ham", "Chicken and Bacon", "... and Pork") and other times it is hidden as part of the meat byproducts and derivatives.

The idea of pork being unhealthy (as opposed to unclean) relates to tapeworm that may be carried by pigs. Historically, undercooked pork was a source of infection to humans. As with all meats, the pork should be cooked before feeding it to your cat. Bacon is often too salty to safely feed to a cat. Cooked pork or ham is safe to feed as a treat. If you allow your cat to eat pieces of sausage, make sure it doesn't contain onion powder or leeks as these are toxic to cats.

Pig meat products can be found in commercially prepared pet foods. Ham and pork passed fit for human consumption and properly cooked is safe for cats to eat. Raw pork is best avoided.

There are also quite a few religions that look down on using pork. they see it as dirty. Aren't there also some parasites that live in pork meat? maybe it's not a good meat for processing and it has too much risk or is too expensive to treat to maintain a healthy diet for felines? not really sure how expensive it is either.
