When I worked for a corporate, they had a good support system and good staff benefits so this is a positive reason to work for one. The thing that changed my mind big time was when I heard someone from head office (not sure of their role) making a comment about hot weather being great for vets because people let their animals get too hot so they need to be seen by the vet and so make more money!!

I think there will always be some independent practices because I know quite a few vets who would never work for a corporate and so will be more likely to set up their own practices.

I know that all corporate practices aren't bad but I just would rather work for a practice where the aim is to help animals and not just on making money.

I have worked for 4 'chains' now - some long term and some locum - there are good and bad in them all, just as there out in small practices. I am now back in a stand alone practice and I am very happy where I am. I prefer the small practices they do tend to offer a more personal service and although I maybe dont get to do as much nursing wise my job is no longer sales driven - they do tend to be happier places to work on the whole but you do get the odd one that is very odd and best left alone

I think a lot of it is down to the original owner of the practice who decides to sell it onto a chain group. My first practice I worked in 12 years ago was bought by CVS when the partners retired - I'm guessing the sale is probably quicker than waiting for a private buyer and possibly more money for the practice too?

The other comment about ads running for weeks and weeks is that I know it's cheaper to pay for a block of 4wks in VT, rather than run the ad for one week then have to mess about re-doing it and paying extra if it doesn't get filled quickly. I have applied for several jobs when the ad is in for week 3 or 4 , only to find it had been filled/too many applications received early on so is no longer vacant. I would imagine that the big groups would do this with their vacancy ads as it makes good business sense.

Having said that, I have locumed for a couple of corporate groups and some are definitely better employers than others - some have lost the personal touch and are just the same as any other large corporate company in any field of work, imho!

i worked for a big chain vets yrs ago and got messed around so much i left, gave the company a second chance a yr or so ago and the messed me around again. so never again will i work for a chain vets.

i also hear that cvs have bought a chain of vets in the south so nurses are leaving as dont like there ways etc which is why lots of cvs jobs going.

but does anyone worry that it might come to a point where these corporates control the veterinary industry?! I'm not saying the veterinary care is bad in a corporate vets, I'm sure the people who work there are just as caring, but if there are people at the top controlling decisions and skimming profits, how can this be good for the clients (animal clients!)

Its one thing having corporate monopolies over our supermarkets and dvd shops, but our veterinary care too?!

I would definitely say a bit of both. I worked for a corporate company for a grand total of 4 months. Never again!

master plan for world domination? actually there are 3 big groups and a couple of also rans with this aim - it isnt just CVS. But you are right all of them crop up with unfailing regularity in the job vacancies - it might just be that they employ more people so have more vacancies but sometimes you do see the same practices advertising week after week but then I suppose that might happen if they have problems filling the vacancies rather than people not staying??
