You may be surprised how many people dont drive (and I am one of them). Ever thought this might be reducing your chances of getting staff? Just because somebody doesnt drive it doesnt mean they arent mobile.

Very true but its sadly not my decision who the practice employs and their reasons for doing / not doing so.

indeed - I know plenty of practices I wouldnt go within a million miles of and nurses I wouldnt touch with a bargepole and equally there must be practices out there that wouldnt go near me either - its all down to preferences. Reputation is everything in this job with it being so close and incestuous

I know of people that have been turned down for a job because of their reputation in the area. The veterinary profession is a small world, everyone seems to know everyone!

How long has she been qualified?

If it's been a while, maybe they want a newish nurse who they can mould and won't try to change things (some practices are like this!)

Or flip that and if she is quite newly qualified they might want someone with a bit more experience and they may have had more experienced nurses apply.

I would definitely get her to ask them just for her own piece of mind.

I used to work in Northamptonshire where, at the time, there was also a dearth of qualified nurses - but a lot of that was down to the wages and conditions in the area at that time.

Would agree with previous posters a point blank refusal before interview shouldnt be taken personally it might be down to the number of applicants

but just a thought - how close to the practice she is working now is the new job ie could it be that boss with vacancy knows boss she is working with? it isnt unheard of for current boss to try and prevent a good nurse from leaving

Also is good is to get a name to address CV/ letter to, BUT do not spell it wrong nor use the wrong name title - addressing me as MR sent a cv flying into bin!

When, as Shelly has already said, you are getting so many applicants for a job, you do have to narrow them down and something like this will give you a big red cross!

Also ensure cover letter is indivual to the applied job, I didn't like what was obviously a copy and paste for every job application person had done.

What position did she apply for? Our place sometimes turn people down if they live more than 20 mins away or if they dont have driving licence etc.

Saying that though, we put an ad in vet times for a qualified nurse and had no one reply at all. Depends on what area you are in regards to lack of qualified vn's. There is serious lack where we are (Ashby de la zouch, leicestershire) but other places seem to have loads.

i said that as the advert had only been out a day or so. she emailed and they have not responded.

she is a qualifed vn and people keep telling me there are not many of us vns out there so all i can think of is her cv is not good at all.

I agree with Shelly. It might be worth your friend asking why, so she can do things to improve her CV if necessary?

It usually down to volume of applications. These days there are so many applicants for each job and its impossible to interview everyone so employers are getting picky and only interviewing the ones with the best qualifications or most experience. Last time we advertised for a job we had over 50 applications so we narrowed it down to 10 based on CV's and only interviewed those.
