Most of the CPD I use in practice - flea/ticks, blood donors and I've just recently finished an NVQ Lv3 in Management.
2- How many long term changes do YOU institute within the practice as a result of what you have learnt?
Since the blood donor talk that I went to - given by the PetBlood Bank - and it was ace. I started trying to find a register that the practice can keep of blood donor pets. It's really successful. I also (3 years ago now) started doing a prescription diet course of Purina PVDs, I was always told that the hospital was Hill's through and through and would never change, 2 years ago we switched to ProPlan lifestage diets and Royal Canin as our first stage prescriptions. (Hill's don't get a look in)
3- Do you attend CPD courses that are relevant to your practice or are they courses of your own choice taken primarily to fulfill your CPD requirement?
A mix of both. I will only attend them if I think they are interesting, but at the same time if the practice didn't think they were relevant then they wouldn't pay the fees.
4- How many practices decide the content of the CPD or do you have free choice of subject?
I can source my own CPD. But the practice has the last say on whether they are willing to pay for it.
5- is CPD fully funded or part funded?
The nurses are each given a budget at the beginning of the year. If the budget is reached and you want more they more often than not will extend the budget in very special occassions.
6- which areas within the practice do you feel are under represented by the available CPD at the moment?
I tend to only go to the regional BVNA meeting CPDs evening or do distance learning. So my choices are usually limited. I would like a CPD course on Large Animal work, as I qualified with the PDSA and moved to East Devon to a mixed practice, and had never worked with farm animals before.
7- how do you share what you have learnt with other practice members?
Quite often will copy handouts and give each member there own or go over topics at nurse meetings, or just have a chat to nurses about it during the working day.

Hope this helps

Re: CPD

1- How much of the CPD that you do are you actually using in
practice?

Very little but try as much as I can

2- How many long term changes do YOU institute within the practice as
a result of what you have learnt?

Yes such as NOT using catgut in rabbits!, use of pharangostomy tubes in total extraction cats

3- Do you attend CPD courses that are relevant to your practice or
are they courses of your own choice taken primarily to fulfill your CPD
requirement?

A bit of both

4- How many practices decide the content of the CPD or do you have
free choice of subject?

They have a monthly CPD night which you are encouraged to attend of their choice of topic.

5- is CPD fully funded or part funded?

depends

6- which areas within the practice do you feel are under represented
by the available CPD at the moment?

alot as being nurse and receptionist at the moment. New staff starting soon... yay

7- how do you share what you have learnt with other practice members?

We discuss it over tea. Then put in a plan of action. Luckily my vet is very willing to discuss and try new ideas etc.

Re: CPD

yes it does thanks

anybody else? especially on under represented cpd areas and how information is shared

Re: CPD

1- How much of the CPD that you do are you actually using in practice?

i use quite a bit.

2- How many long term changes do YOU institute within the practice as a result of what you have learnt?

Have made a few changes and initiated a practice emergency care plan.

3- Do you attend CPD courses that are relevant to your practice or are they courses of your own choice taken primarily to fulfill your CPD requirement?

A bit of both really, tend to go for what i am interested in firstly but most cross over to benefit practice

4- How many practices decide the content of the CPD or do you have free choice of subject?

free choice

5- is CPD fully funded or part funded?

fully within reason - have just done nursing certificate and was completely funded but will benefit practice.

6- which areas within the practice do you feel are under represented by the available CPD at the moment?

nursing clinics, may be advanced medical nursing.

7- how do you share what you have learnt with other practice members?

write notes and if appropriate do lunchtime talk

Hope this helps
just got a few questions on CPD

1- How much of the CPD that you do are you actually using in practice?

Probably not much... difficult to say exactly but if I come away from some CPD and have 2 or 3 things (dependimg on time length of CPD) that I really liked / would like to change in practice etc then I am happy. Don't know whether this isn't very much but it how it seems to be.

2- How many long term changes do YOU institute within the practice as a result of what you have learnt?

Again see answer to above question.... have definately put into practice things I think relevant... which also includes alot of suggestions/ ideas/ little tings that I have picked up from this site ( which is why I love it!)

3- Do you attend CPD courses that are relevant to your practice or are they courses of your own choice taken primarily to fulfill your CPD requirement?

I chose CPD courses that I am interested in... no point otherwise... I just get bored/ not interested/ fall a sleep! Most courses I attend are relevant to the practice tho

4- How many practices decide the content of the CPD or do you have free choice of subject?

See above answer... I chose what I want to go on.

5- is CPD fully funded or part funded?

We have an allowance of £250 a year, but also attend alot of free CPD .. and there are alot of oppertunities for this.

6- which areas within the practice do you feel are under represented by the available CPD at the moment?

Probably schedule 3 stuff, alternative therapies, good reception CPD.

7- how do you share what you have learnt with other practice members?

We were talking about this the other day..... things aren't shared very much at all... not intentionally.... everyone means too but always time constraints.... even if/when time is tried to be made to get everyone together then something crops up.... so we must try harder!
