She's a Malayan Sun Bear cub, rescued from a wildlife trader who was trying to sell her after killing her mother and snatching her from the wild. She was about 6 weeks old

Re: New arrival in BearVille

Hi Helen, she is very cute but is definately trouble with a capital T! Was teaching her to climb today bit she thinks its more fun to wrestle, covered in scratches and bites!

She is one of the luckier ones as was rescued quite soon after the hunter sold her to the trader so was dehydrated, malnourished and has terrible parasite problems, all things that could be fixed with a few sleepless nights and nursing! We get a lot in in worse states, beaten or neglected , often with missing limbs from the traps the hunter lay to catch them. There is still a thriving market for bear cubs, as Cambodia grows in wealth the rich buy them as status symbols so they are normally kept in a tiny cages or chained to a tree in the garden with no shade, or interaction and fed table scraps. We also have a lot of Asiatic Black Bear cubs who are usually intercepted at the border as the traders get more money selling them into Laos or Vietnam to join the bile trade. Its always a mixed bag of emotions when we get a newbie in, I'm always so pleased they have come to us and can be safe but so sad that the trade is still happening and that so many people still think its OK to buy bears!

Lola is the 150th bear we've resuced in Cambodia alone, 12 of these have been this year alone! They just keep coming..great they they are safe now but worrying that the trade in bears and their parts is still thriving..

Re: New arrival in BearVille

I just don't see how anyone can kill the mum and steal the cub.
