I think its hard being a qualified nurse in a new job. People sometimes expect too much of you.

I have worked in 3 practices now and they all have there own way of doing things and they expect you to know their way.

I really struggled in the practice im at now in the first 3 months, i was qualified and just felt that everyone thought i was rubbish, and i wanted to leave. but once i got used to it, they all realised i was a good nurse and ive been there nearly 4 years now

Re: probation period

thank you all. i do get the feeling that ypu all think that i am a new qualifed vn. i have to say i qualifed a few yrs ago .

I used to work with a SVN who when asked to do something would do it but via passing the time of day with reception, chatting to kennel staff, cuddling a kitten .....etc. Didn't matter what she was asked - even in an emergency. Drove people mad. Despite various appraisals nothing changed so i altered the rota to keep her away from the people who could stand it no more and put her with calm patient people. Her confidence and knowledge grew and all was well.

Try not to worry. Speak to your bosses again and ask how you can speed up a bit. Hopefully everything will be fine. No one is perfect after 6 months!

Re: probation period

[quote user="kitten"]

Everyone does work at their own pace and as an HVN, I'd rather someone takes their time and does a task properly rather than rushing through it an potentially doing it wrong or forgetting to do something vital.

As you're on a probation period, your practice won't be expecting you to be proficient at everything they ask you to do or to be speedy. Both these things come with experience. It will come, don't worry!

Re: probation period

Hi.... everyone works at their own pace and also picks things up at a different pace.... I really wouldn't worry toomuch about being 'slow' because as things/procedures become more familiar to you and you gain confidence, you will get abit faster...... I always say to any new people that the vet world is like it's own little world inside the real world, with a different language and a different way of life to the 'normal' world! And this takes alot of time to adjust to and get used to........

I also always say that I would much rather someone do something slowly and properly than rush it and do it wrong or not right...... things will get quicker the longer you work there... so try not to worry too much ....

Re: probation period

spoke to people at work including the boss and vets and they did agree i need to be a bit faster but are very happy with the work i am doing. i am trying not to panic so much as this makes me mess up on little thongs. dont get me wrong i have not killed or injured anythig or one but just stupid little things that i do the wrong way to them.
