What I would like to know what am I allowed to do as a 2nd year student?? I currently work weekends alone (no VS or RVN) and am expected to medicate in-patients, flush catheters

Re: Making a point
Regarding the monitoring of anaesthesia - as far as I was aware, anyone the vet deems to be a 'suitably-qualified person' can do this - be it a RVN with 15yrs experience or the 15yr old work experience student....
That's what I've been told too, All new members of staff supervised by suitably qualified persons before being allowed to monitor solo. Not the work experiance tho. lol!

Re: Making a point

Regarding the monitoring of anaesthesia - as far as I was aware, anyone the vet deems to be a 'suitably-qualified person' can do this - be it a RVN with 15yrs experience or the 15yr old work experience student....

Re: Making a point

Thank you for taking the time for posting all that.

RCVS/BVNA info as of the beginning of 2010 (told the following over the phone)

Qualified and Registered veterinary nurses:

Emergency
     first aid.

Minor
procedures under a Vet registered with the RCVS

Stitch ups, FNA’s, Skin scrapes, lump removals, dentals- not
extractions, radiography, etc… no entering of body cavity.

All
     general nursing duties.

Registered Trainee Veterinary Nurses (second year
students):

Blood
sampling- under supervision of RVN/ VS.

Catheterisation-
     under supervision.

Monitoring
     of anaesthesia.

Animal Nursing Assitants:

Recovering
     animals post op.

Feeding.

Cleaning.

Animal
     handling.

Reception
     duties.

Consulting
     with veterinary surgeon.

Kennel
     duties.

Preparation
     of animals for surgery.

Preparing
     treatment areas.

NO ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION OR MONITORING OF
ANAESTHESIA

Unfortunately this is not adhered to by many places and thats why there are so many hazy bits... I think the panorama expose has had a big impact on clinics all over and that is why everything is getting tighter. hope this helps x

Re: Making a point
When the last nurse was there she was living at the practice so I could call her when I needed help.
and you would be surprised how many practices think this is ok - which was a major consideration for me not taking any job that required me to live on site in the finish. Dont get me wrong I dont mind giving somebody a helping hand when they are stuck but too often this happens because there simply arent enough staff or the wrong staff available and employers dont want to do anything about it
