Hi,

Your defo on a good wage for a 2nd year student. I'm on around that aswell (1st year student) I work in a referral practice though, the wage is competitive. Alot of the nurses I work with said they used to get between £9-10K per annum. In my previous job, the QVN was only paid £12k per annum, and she has 12 years experience as a QVN!!

I reckon somewhere in the region of between 16k and 25k depending on ppls experience and quals.

When you say diploma I'm assuming you are talking about the advanced Diploma (and not the new training scheme) God this is confusing!!! they should of called it a certificate in Veterinary Nursing not a diploma!

Thank you to everyone who has posted on the salary topic. I'm feeling much more satisfied with what I earn and less hard done by!

Its just a shame that we are in such a low paid but high importance job, that without us would leave vet practices across the country very stuck! Lets hope that the salary boundaries gradually increase with each year to something more respectable!

What brings you here? How are you?

I feel a lot happier now with my salary after seeing everyones posts. I guess after Hadlow College and my last job I thought I was being hard done by! But now I realise that they were just very well paid jobs for an animal sector career. Oh well! I'm happy so thats more important!

My first job, in 2008, as a pre vet nursing apprentice, I earned £50 per week before tax!

I still don't get a fab wage, but it's a bit better than it was then!

when i was a student i was on £7,000 a yr untill i qualifed and went to £12,000 down south. we also did 1 night in 3 on call ( and took the phones) and 1 in 3 weekends on call with phones.

Am in the same position, I am 25, just started 2nd year training now changed to the diploma.

I work 35 hours a week, have to be on call at work 1 night in 6 and at work on call 1 weekend in 6. I can go home during the day dependant on in patients and treatment but have to be on site between 10pm and 7am every night.

I get paid just under 12500 a year.

I have questioned my wages before but I guess I knew what I was getting into, the annoying thing was I got paid a lot more for being a kennel worker without and out of hours.

It may sound like a lot to the people who qualified years ago (altho not that long ago) but for the work and stick we all have to put up with quite frankly I think its takes the michael just a bit.

However I do get my college fees paid for.

Have come to the end of my moan, and have told my head nurse that I'm gonna shut my mouth, I'm lucky to have a job full stop. Especially one as secure as this.

Blimey,

I started on £180/week in first year which went up to £195 in second year! Sounds like your doing quite well with what they are paying you especially as you are getting the training paid for you. There is definitely a big difference in salaries across the uk, with the higher pay seeming to be in southern england.

At least you should have a decent payrise to look forward to once you qualify, hopefully!

Hello Miss Jolley!!

From my travels around the country, there are differences in salary according to level, experience and diplomas that nurses hold, and also who they work for. A good place to get an idea is looking at recruitment agency adverts and on here to gauge what other nurses near you potentially earn. If you looked at in the future doing specialist referral work, I reckon you could earn around £27 - 28K if you were in the right area. As always, London will pay a little higher than elsewhere (though not always a lot more!), but I'm guessing you don't want to head south again!

If you are gaining a nationally recognised qualification, which comes under the category of apprenticeship, you are not entitled to NMW.

Do you mean your employer doesn't have to pay you at least minimum wage if you are being trained while on the job? If so, that's not true;

In a position where you will be able to gain nationally recognised qualification, employers can pay whatever they like. Minimum wage restrictions don't apply. Many employers are decent and pay reasonable wages, but not all of them- then again, there are expenses involved in training nurses and we all have to start somewhere!

I feel like I have a silly question, but does minimum wage not apply to student vet nurses?

I have an interview for a job a good 200 miles away from home this week, I know wages are on the low side but what do you think I could expect as a starting salary? And how much do you think I could ask for?

It's obviously not about the money but i'm worried about paying the bills!

I was on just over 15k when I first qualified and got paid extra for nights. This was quite a good wage compared to some of my friends. Found it really does depend on what part of the country you are in.

I am on 12k before tax and just newly qualified, it should go up to 14k when i register and get my badge through. Not a bad wage but still isn't enough and i struggle to run my appartment.

when i qualified in 2008, i was on 12k. 12k for a student is good but with all the costs going up it is never enough. Im on 17.8k now but 5k of that is for doing nights.

The government are changing the way that tax credits are paid so wouldnt be sure if the wages that people are on in this post would be low enough?

That said, it does depend on personel circumstances, e.g household income, not just individual income. Ive always tried to apply for tax credits etc and get turned down

But you should apply for everything possible otherwise you will never know

I was a 2nd year trainee last year and took home around £900 a month after tax and such.
