Thing that I am worried about most is failing on the 3rd attempt. Does any one have much experience of special consideration to sit it a fourth time. What do they consider????

Hiya, yes we had a student that passed the practicals on the 2nd attempt, but kept failing the written. Had to apply for a 4th attempt to do the writtens. She didnt really have to explain herself but had to come up with a revision plan and send that off with the application, and get written confirmation from the practice that she would get time in work to study etc.

She has just qualified! So dont panic, im sure it wont come to that.

Re: exam appeal help

I am in the same boat, I passed 4 out of 8 tasks and this was my 2nd attempt. I am interested to see what 'key steps' I didn't pass!
Just thinking logically about this and other threads on the same subject - isnt there a really simple solution which might make things a lot clearer where candidates have to appeal their results? - film the practical exams. We do it with our hypnosis students and then go back through it with them so they can see where they did well or not so well and areas either the student needs to tighten up on or areas where we as teachers could do better. It would also show if there are any discrepancies between the examining centres

I just received my results for my second attempt at the practicals. This time I passed 4 tasks and got well above the pass rate on 5 of the 8 tasks. On the radiography task I got 88% which is the pass rate but did not get the key step... which I think I did get.... but then again it is a month on and I can't be sure.

Had I not failed that section (this was back in the old days of sections) I would have passed the whole thing but because of that I had to resit the one section at a cost of about £120. Very very frustrating and I sympathise with everyone who has had problems, seems not much has changed! There must be a better way of assessing practical ability, the whole thing seems pretty unfair to me!

Re: exam appeal help

Sadly it came back as basically student word against the examiner and nothing would be done!! What on earth is the point of having a second person in on the exam and an appeal form if nothing is ever going to be investigated. Complete waste of time really.

My father in law died at home after a long battle with cancer the night before the practicals (in 2005 when I sat them). I still went to the exam the next day and the only thing I failed on was that I picked the wrong sized urinary catheter for a dog! My assessor treid to appeal on my behalf due to family circumstances and not being the in the best frame of mind to sit a stressfull exam - they didn't allow any appeal. Actually I think I did okay to only fail on that one stupid thing under the circumstances.

Anyway, good luck but I think once they make up their minds you are fighting a losing battle.

Hi,

Just wondering if any one could give me some guidance. One of my students have sadly just failed her practicals, now she has just got back the sheets which say she passed on the onces she thought she had failed and failed the ones she thought she passed, even to the extent she never finished her anae calculation but passed that practical.

Is there anything we can do to check these are her results etc and to query her marks?

Many thanks in advance

Im qualified now but when i first did my practicals i failed my anaesthesia for getting the calculation wrong, to me this is the same as not finishing it yet your student still passed that one!??? How inconsistent of the examiners and the rcvs. grrrr

Re: exam appeal help

Grr... so frustrating!!
Has anyone appealed the exam on these grounds and had the results overturned on here? i dont think they will even read the form, the reply time for it is 4 weeks and if i wanted to sit the march exams you have to apply in 2!!! its ridiculous!!

Re: exam appeal help

I passed 4 and one of the ones I failed on I got 95% but apparently didn't get a key step.
I have sent off a form for more info and to appeal as i cant afford to re-sit but looking at other posts it dosnt seem to matter to the RCVS what we said we did its our word against theirs and they always win =( Its a realy bad system.
