I managed not to go all guns blazing! in fact I thought i was a bit too defeatist! Yeah i do see what you mean- about the pay scale between nurses. Maybe I'm just getting angry and upset cos I'm stressed about other things at the moment that money could really help with (i did say that to the boss too)! Ah well I will keep working my bestest and hope that one day this will be reflected in my salary.

I realise what I said may have ruffled feathers but the way I see it go in there guns blazing and you can expect to be shot at. Handled with a bit of tact it might be a different matter.

Its not how much a single employee is worth its how much a single employee is worth relative to other employees. ie what would happen if the head nurse was on a given wage and the deputy head nurse was already on a wage very close to that. It would be difficult to give the less senior nurse a wage rise without the head nurse taking umbrage

Well finally tracked down one of my bosses!

It seems that as i had already taken on a lot of the kind of deputy head nurse responsibilities they see no reason to up my pay!! So basically your doing such a good job already we see no reason to reward you for it. They also said that i had a pay rise in july- which myself and everyone did- it was the overdue yearly increase we should have had months before! He also said that we get paid quite well(!!!) compared to other practices he knows of!! Quite well??!! Oh yeah, you try and rent a place on what i earn- not easy!!! ...sigh. Well he said he would review what i'm being paid currently being paid, but i felt that may have been a way to fob me off...

On the plus side i managed not to vomit or get angry tears!! though it was a discussion on the phone!

i can't believe that some people think its acceptable to take on a more demanding role and not be given a pay rise!!! yes it might look good on your cv and maybe we all do this job because we love it but you should also be paid for the work you are carrying out and if that means extra responsibilities then you deserve more money. we are not a charity. this attitude merely illustrates how undervalued our profession is.

Hahahaha! ....yeah. whatever!!

And 2nd year nurse girl (forgotton your name already-memory goes haywire when im stressed!) that was me last year/year before!! we got taken over you see, then the head nurse went on maternity leave and all the qualified nurses left!! so much responsibility in such a short time!! so i suppose it is high time i got some kind of recognition! my boss never phoned me back so i am gonna try and speak to him tomorrow.

Oh n yes i was too excited to ask about pay at the time, i believe my last words on the subject were "can i run round and tell people now because im excited?", ah... how naiive!!

Anyways i have a really bad headache from stressing and not eating properly so am gonna get some kip. Thanks for all the comments everybody. I'll keep you posted and heres hoping they at least see my point of view.

Hey! That proper sucks! There is no way you should have head nurse duties without extra pay. Did you not ask about wages etc when they offered you the role?? I would imagine that in all your excitement that you may have forgotton though so understand if you didnt.

I have taken on the role of head nurse at my practice and have been doing it for 2 months. I do not enjoy it one bit and wish I hadnt even bothered now! Should have stuck at being a regular old qualified nurse. Its alot harder being in a senior position than I realised, and your days just end up being full of stress, meetings, paperwork and not a lot else. I am just about ready to quit to be honest, had enough!

But if your doing a good job and enjoying the extra responsibilties then I would stick at it, prove your worth and ask for a payrise.

Hope you get your payrise that you thoroughly deserve.

Is the practice one that revues wages at a set time each year? - ie I have worked a couple of places where revues happened either at the end/beginning of the new year or at the end of a tax year - so could it be that a wage revue is pending and dependant on how you manage the job?

also agree if you already have a good wage there may only be so much the practice can stump up

Fair point but in that case why do more work and have more stress when you could stay doing what you are doing now for the same money. Yes I understand it looks good on your CV but I would still want a pay rise.

I'm in a similar situation now...our head nurse is leaving tomorrow and we'll be 2 staff members down (one has also just left) and it's falling on me to pick up the slack and keep the place running...i've just had a small pay rise but that was for passing my first year...i got this even before head nurse handed in her notice...so i've now been landed with this extra responsibility and i've only just started my 2nd year...i don't know everything yet...even with regards running the place...and i'm so ready for them to shout at me for something and i'll snap and tell them to shove it...very worried about also being able to manage this as i'm still concerned with studying...it's hard to do anything in practice at the moment as we're short staffed and so there's no time to do anything as it's been very busy recently...grr...

I would def be expecting a pay rise if given the job of deputy head nurse! Why shouldn't you? It's more responsibility and work so why do it for no extra money??

Congratulations on your promotion but I would be going and speaking to your boss if I were you. If you deserve a promotion then you deserve a pay rise! x

yeah thats the plan mad basset hound girl (my mum also has a basset- gorgeous boy!!)

Although having to find out practically on my payslip was a bit of a downer to say the least. Still waiting for that phonecall for a chat....

And yes i was pleased to think they thought i derserved it. But another way they think i deserve more stress and hassle, for no reward. Lovely people. Im sure it will work out whether it will mean im going to struggle paying my rent or be marginally better off we will have to see...

I must admit I would expect a payrise for a promotion, otherwise its a real kick to you.

I would expect deputy and head nurses to be on more money to compensate for the extra workload they have to put into the job role.

I think its not fair of them to expect you to work for the same amount of money, but then again I would have asked what the conditions were prior to accepting and would ask for a new contract but thats just me

I do wonder about this wonderful qualification a lot these days and hoping im not on a premature downward spiral about to give it up! it is tricksy getting that balance and i think we do get taken advantage of a lot due to our good nature and love of the animals. Thats why i was so angry and upset, it bugs me that they think i would be happy with this new role if my reward is added stress??!! If the situation was turned round im sure they would laugh in my face!!

Anyways rant over for now. Am waiting for a boss to return my call...hmm...

So you have dilemas too? Don't you hate those?!

Ok firstly many congrats on your job promotion but I'm sorry that you feel this way about it but I'd be happy with just the promotion based on the fact that my employers felt that I deserved it & also because it would be something great to go on your C.V.

But as for the whole wages thing why should we just exspect it if we are being paid a decent enough wage. I'm all for pay rises & its always nice to receive one & I also beleive Veterinary Nurses should be paid slightly better for all the work & training thats put in. If the job involves more hours & a lot more & more important duties then yes a pay rise should be given & I'd maybe query it but not exspect it. Why not try sitting down with your employer & ask to discuss things with them about a potential pay rise & maybe this will help x.

That sounds parp, I know those tears only too well.

Recently been going through massive dilemas with what to do next after this wonderful qualification we have managed to achieve. It's getting the balance with furthering our career and not being taken the piss out of.

But, seriously, I agree, that if you get a promotion, you should receive pay accordingly- thats the whole idea of a promotion! I think you are well within your rights to refuse the promotion, if you first clarify that you will not be getting a payrise for it. Perhaps ensure you have your info correct before leaping in!

An old employer of mine "promoted" one of the nurses to deputy head nurse and when she asked about a payrise, they said they would see how well she performed the job first. A year later, still no payrise. Hmmmmm.
