someone on my yard actually gave my horse half a syringe of sedalin today without my permission. it was given at 8am and at 7pm she was still swaying in her box (she is on box rest) am worried about her. will she be ok? she is a 530kg tb

Re: sedalin advice needed

I would also find out the womans vet and speak to him/her about it. The woman should not be permitted ANY medication in future her bed she lies in it she proved she is dangerous. And make no mistake she IS dangerous as she doesn't know anything about the drug, how it works or why.

Her animals need anything she pays extra for a vet to administer it. Point out rules on POM would have affected him/her had your horse not recovered or anything happened to it.

I would also mention police as someone said POM and the law even if you don't call them in scare the bejeasus out of her.

Re: sedalin advice needed

yep going mad wasnt the half of it. thats exactly right i was mortified it is a sedative and that is exactly what il be saying to yard owner when she is back. my horse is fine now which is what everyone keeps telling me at the yard but it is not the point! anything couls of happened to her and it is a risk and that is what im sticking to when i speak to manager.

thank you for the support ladies. I knew i wasnt the only horse person that would have gone mad at this

Which incidentally, if it works the same way as in smallies, doesn't make them less aware of the 'Scary Thing', just makes them less able to react to it - hence why we never give ACP for fireworks anymore at our practice.

Just a great big GRRRRRR at someone overdosing your horse on a POM-V without your consent!

Re: sedalin advice needed

I bet you went mad, I would have! I worked on a lot of yards when I was younger and also kept our horses on a lot of different places as well as at home and I have never even heard of someone doing anything like that- you just don't do it, do you!

Even in an emergency I can't imagine even the actual yard owner would ever do something like that without contacting you first, the most I would expect would be that they'd call the vet in an emergency.

Is the owner going to speak to this woman?

Re: sedalin advice needed

Hey

I have had quite a lot to do with sedalin and owners and have had to explain a lot of times that giving more of the tube does not make your horse more sedated it only ever lasts for longer so that is probably why she took so long to get over it but thankfully that does seem to be the only side effect I have heard of in a healthy horse.

The other owner definately needs to be told that it is a real no go to give someone elses horse drugs no matter how much they think they are helping. We had one that was so allergic to bute he would actually collapse. Really not good. If you dont want to speak to the owner then ask the yard owner to I am sure that they will do that for you.

Hope she is all ok

Re: sedalin advice needed

OMG! My pony has serious issues which means her diet and medication has to be very tightly controled and I have ended up having to be downright rude to some people who dont get the message that its not on to mess with other peoples animals. Giving medication like that is a total no even though your horse was fine - wouldnt have done my pony much good with her heart condition!! At the end of the day its a POM and she shouldnt have done that. I would make my feelings very clear!

Re: sedalin advice needed

thanks for the posts last night. iv just got back from the yard and my mare is over it thank fully.

i dont generally like creating a fuss, but said lady smacks my horse too (she told me) so that has been reported my poor mare has enough to deal with just being on box rest.

Seems silly that someone else medicated your horse without your permission. Make it clear it must not happen again, and they should call you before they do anything anyway. If it was my pet (and the same can be said for my lil sis and her pony) anyone "self medicates" them, they'd better run. Far away. And never come back.

There are only 2 vets who I trust, and only 1 gets the say on the medication to be given.

sedalin comes in a 10ml tube with ACP at 35mg/ml

Dose is 0.15mg ACP/kg

Therefore your horse would want approx 80mg

Half a syringe is 175mg

Apparently for deep sedation you can go up to 1.5X that dose.

Your horse had over 2X the recommended dose.

I'd be having words with whoever administered it.

However, ACP is a relatively safe drug so I'm sure your horse will be fine.
