Hi shell i not getting married till start 2012 but i was thinking of putting sweets on table but somre or less just scatter them round the place instead of being in bags as the guests will have a bit of banter, well my 1's ne ways lol. i was thinking puttin love hearts and flying saucers out

I am really enjoying all of the planning...just sorting the cake at the mo, didnt realise how many different styles/colours/shapes you could get :)

Firstly...congratulations!!!!

I got married in May 2008 - and would do it all again tomorrow - had a fab time, even though it rained. I did plan for it raining and if it was good weather, then it was a bonus, doing it this way, you won't be disapoointed. As for favours, i did something slightly more modern than the usual 5 sugared Almonds. Traditionally, the 5 almonds represent Health, Wealth, Happiness, Long Life and Fertility - but not everyone likes sugard almonds, so I needed something different. I filled my favour boxes (which doubled up as name cards) with a different sweet to represent each one - they went down a storm! For health we had a "fruit salad" chewy sweet, for wealth I purchased chocolate silver sixpences (from Ebay) for happiness, it was one individually wrapped chocolate dairy milk square, for long life It was a "shoelace" sweet (traditionally a chinese notion as the longer the "noodle" the longer the life - I chose a red liquorice shoelace) and for fertility it was a Jelly baby! A tiny card inside explained what each one was for.
As for my cake, although it was an American 3 tiered cake - to save money, the top one was a dummy - it was made of polystyrene that the cake maker covered in icing and decorated as usual - saved me about £100 doing it that way and was much better - but I only had 80 guests and not everyone likes cake. Even with two tiers, the hotel cut the portions so small for the guests, i had loads left!!

I used photos of my bunnies stuck onto card (my colour theme was summer yellow) on little clips as table numbers at my reception

Your wedding sounds totally up my street!

A vet I know got married recently at Whipsnade zoo. We got to go round on the safari bus and they had boardgames and playstations to play on!

We got amrried in June this year. Main thing is dont get stresssed and make sure you enjoy the day as it goes so quickly.

We went for a fun day as not big into romance!! Favours were some retro sweets eg blackjacks, parma violets in a clear box which we decorated with curling ribbon. We named all our tables after sweets and then had a massive sweet table on the evening - jars of all the retro sweets with candy stripe bags - about 30kgs of sweets in total and they all went!! Just make sure you do what you want not what anyone else wants. We went for completely untraditional music etc eg beach boys, and witty rather than romantic verses. Let your day reflect you as a couple!

I got married 2 months ago and planning it was so stressful so my top tip is to take some time to chill out before hand!! I got our wedding cake from Marks and Spencers. We had 3 sizes of plain white iced sponge cakes and it only cost about £100. We got a cake stand and some sugar flower decorations from ebay and put ribbon round the edge. It looked really nice and cost less than £150 all together. The same in a cake shop would have cost me near £300!. For favours we had mini bars of green and blacks chocolate and my mum made little organza bags to put them in. We made name tags which doubled as place settings. If your making anything yourself a glue gun is your best friend! You will use it loads and it sticks anything to everything.............it frickin burns your skin tho so be carfeul

OOOH congratulations! Im getting married in may also in skiathos! mega excited. the good news is cos its abroad iv not really got much to worry about until i get out there! im having a party back home after and im thinking of getting a cake from marks and spencers, they do some lovely looking cakes for under £200. or, i might buy plain cakes and attempt to decorate them by using large coloured ribbon then putting a sparkling brooch in the middle of the ribbon like posh cake designers do (only they'd probably charge you £600 plus for it!). Favours, im struggling for ideas, thought maybe fans for the ladies but otherwise im stuck! For flowers, im getting fake ones and taking them over in a suitcase from a company called sarahs flowers. happy planning!

Totally agree.

I didnt bother with favours-personally didnt see the point but thats just me.

What I did was to make menu holders (with the help of friends) which were later given to close family, like the grannies, aunties etc. Seemed to go down well as they could put a wedding pic in the holder.

I was very lucky as my mums friends are rather whizzy in the kitchen and with flowers so they did an excellent job. Also another of mums friends is very into photography so she volunteered to do that- poor woman! I HATE having my photo taken! She did a great job, I certainly didnt envy her task!

So all in all I think that having friends involved in the process worked well for us, it took pressure off me as I knew that mums friends would do a fab job.

my bf sister had a fake cake. she got some polystyrene blocks and had them iced for £20 and decorated the cake herself with foam flowers, ribbon and jewels (looked amazing!). she had a cheap cake hidden in the kitchen and had that given out to people. she saved a fortune cos she was quoted £400 for what she wanted!

Congrats!

There are loads of things you can do for wedding favours, some people buy a lottery ticket and put in it a little box - it's more practical than a wedding favour and your guest might even win something! Of course there are the traditional bags of sugared almonds/sweets which is nice but most people don't actually like them! Other ideas are miniature whisky/brandy/rum etc for the male guests in a teeny box and something smelly etc for the women (baby soap etc) in a nice box or bag. You can make your own boxes from a template you can easily download online and you can get nice card and ribbon to co-ordinate with your colours from papermill or somewhere like that.

We had our cake made by my Husbands cousin (who luckily is a chef!) but if you know someone who makes cakes then this is an option, but honestly you can buy nice plain cakes and then buy a cake stand and layer them like that. Don't spend a fortune in a wedding shop for a special cake, you end up paying for the cache' of a wedding cake but you can make a plain white cake look lovely by putting fresh flowers etc on the top, simplicity looks lovely and elegant on a cake. Another alternative to a big cake is buying one of those very high perspex cupcake stands and having individual cupcakes on it, this looks very modern and funky and you can decorate them in your colour scheme too.

Here's an idea.. for your table plan.. instead of name cards, you could have a little photo of each person in a small photo holder where they will be sitting!

Congratulations!! I made my own invitations and favours to save some money. For the favours I wrapped a chocolate heart in florists cellophane and tied a red ribbon around it, I then attatched the persons name to it so it doubled as a name card as well.

The best advice I can give you is to do it your way, it's your wedding at the end of the day so don't be pressured into making decisions you aren't comfortable with and most importantly, ENJOY it! I loved planning my wedding and the day it'self was the best day of my life, it just went so quickly though. We have just celebrated our 6th wedding anniversary but I would love to do it all again (with the same man!) Good luck with it all.

I love little beaded wine glass charms, I have made a few in the past and just think they are so cute - colour coded for the boys and girls of course!

Also, if you want any help with bridal or bridesmaid jewellery give me a bell, I make a lot of bits and can try to do you a fairly cheap deal - anything for a vetnurse friend!

I'm getting married in June and cant wait!! we are saving money by making our own invitations, getting table decorations from ebay/ ikea. Im not having wedding favours, in my opinion people arent that bothered about them. Im not having a photographer either, my sister has a decent camera and is quite into photography so she is doing them, she did my other sisters last month and they were great. Im not really a fan of those posed family pictures, I like pictures of people laughing and having fun!

at the end of it all dont let it stress you cos I'm not - ask me in six months though and my answer might be different!!

Money saving idea (only a little one but all helps!), have your favours double up as place names. You could put the peoples names on a bag of sweets on the table. My boyfriends sister just got married and she got loads of bits and bobs from ebay, she saved an absolute fortune by buying stuff from Hong kong and places like that.

for favours how about little boxes with some sweets or something similar in (haribo...hint hint!!!)

think a good thing is to have disposable cameras on the tables and collect them at the end of the day so you can have a collection of candid shots taken by friends and family!!

food....has to be yummy and good for me!!!!!
