I think there are three interesting things here:

Caro has raised an interesting and valid point about the value of advice on the phone, if all Vetfone can do is refer for an appointment.

However (and I am completely impartial here), I think that STRVNs post completely vindicates the value of the service. And it's not just that not all practices will explain a diagnosis as fully as a given client needs, there's also the fact that people just forget what they've been told.

Still, as STRVN (I think) said, it would be pretty dull if we all agreed about everything.

F1 makes a reasonable point. Caro, if you denounce a job as worthless, you are in effect saying that anyone doing that job is worthless. That IS disrespectful when you say it in conversation with people that do the job you've just described as worthless. Showing respect for each other is one of the fundamental rules of this forum. That doesn't mean I think you were wrong to raise any of the points you have. Just that they could have been made differently.

Re: vetfone

How dare you say you think my job is a waste of time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For someone who is supposed to be on adult bullying and how people feel, you need to have a look at the way you phrase your posts. You have made me, as a person feel absolutely terrible tonight by effectively saying the job I do is worthless and 'a waste of time'.

I enjoy what I do and whilst there's a requirement for the service, it has its place and many of the calls I take do not require immediate veterinary attention, just advice until normal surgery hours and would otherwise have resulted in a client who doesn't have any knowledge at all of basic medical care/parasite treatment/diarrhoea/grazes etc bothering a vet out of hours, being stressed all weekend or having a huge callout fee for something which really is routine. Oh, and then finding that they're not covered by their insurance either as they didn't follow procedure or it didn't warrant an out of hours callout.

Re: vetfone

I have to say I enjoy it, and it works in well with any locum work I have, and also if I dont happen to have a locum booked its extra money, and yes not the best but I know some qualifieds slogging there guts out in practice who are actually on less than what I get from vetfone.

I also enjoy the chatting with clients, as this is something I have missed over the past few years where I have either been locuming or in emergency and critical care work, so it is quite refreshing to be able to discuss things with clients again, and it keeps your knowledge fresh....if you dont use it you loose it is my motto.

I like F1chick do not advise everything to the vet, I think I am quite capable of giving sound advice to the multitude, and if anything I probably only refer about 10% of all the calls I take.At the end of the day every person that phones a vet does not automatically need an appointment, most calls there are probably advice calls.

I had a very lengthy conversation one day with a lady who's dog had been hospitalised and had had various blood tests done and was in liver failure, I spent ages explaining what bloods would have been taken and what they would be looking for, I also explained that certain bloods could give an indicator of one thing, but another type of test may rule it out. This lady was very thankfull and said that I had made her feel a lot better as I had explained it to her in terms that she understood, and before I had explained it to her, she was all for leaving her vet and finding another as she thought that he was not doing a good job. this type of call makes my job very pleasureable.

Re: vetfone

[quote user="Caro Laithwaite"]

you can not diagnose and to play safe it is always see the vet.
And sorry but whoppeedee to petlog l doubt it is any different as the same people still own it.

So you would tell EVERY cut pad to come into the OOH vet? EVERY V&D case to come to the OOH Vet? Of course you wouldn't.

You get Insurance clients asking general health care questions too.

Personally, I find the last part of this reply very hurtful. Ok, you didn't get on with them and you have your own opinions, which is fine, but my point was that the workload has increased, so there are more shifts available and also, you spend most calls re-uniting pets with owners.
