I thought after 7 days you could re-home a stray animal, but someone else said 28 days. There were a few kittens

Re: rehoming strays and the law
The problem is chips do move and not everyone checks properly, our practice policy is we re chip those that have moved as most owners are happy to be safer than sorry, this is also especially important for those pets with passports.
Do you surgically remove the other chip? As sometimes having two chips confuses the reader and neither of them work. Also, how do you stand with Pet Passports, if both chips work and they could, potentially find 2 chip no's?

I think you have to make it clear on the passport there are 2 chip numbers, and give 1 as a primary. The clinic I am at tomorrow has a note from DEFRA about this to their vet, i'm sure they won't mind me copying it! Will try and post it tomorrow, but you might have to wait till monday, as working 8.30-8.20pm tomorrow and 7.30-4.30pm sunday. Got 2 days off tho to recover!

Re: rehoming strays and the law
Yes I think there should be education for people taking on cats with diseases. Even things like vaccinations dn't get kept up either as some of the owners that get the animals cannot afford it! Does that come down to the fact that you have to be at home all day, not have children etc?? to be able to take on an animal.

Re: rehoming strays and the law

Only thing I would like to say is that I think sometimes people take on FIV cats not fully realising what the disease is.
Im sure the main centres are fine, especially as members of the public looking round, unfortunately I know it's not the fact for some the foster carer's, im not labeling everyone ofcourse! Im afraid I have seen some appaling conditions in 11 yrs of being in practice. We do have rescue charities we are involved with, who provide an outstanding level of care to the animals they take in. But unfortunately I have dealt with the ones that are not too.....

(she'd been missing for months, old owners had moved, had new kittens and felt the cat disliked them anyway, they agreed to help the new owner elderly pensioner by paying half the vets fees for the amputation the cat required. The cat is so much better with his elderly owner!)

I will have to make something up for future rehomes. Thanks for the advice!

CP's policy is that we do rehome known healthy FIV positive cats as indoor only pets, to informed owners, which we know from experience can continue to enjoy a good quality of life without clinical signs, for considerable periods of time.

We would not home such cats if we felt the indoor-only clause was not conducive to the welfare of that cat, this is guided case by case by the veterinary profession as every CP cat should undergo examination by a vet at least once during its care. We do not however rehome FeLVs. Our policies are guided by our own internal veterinary specialists, our academic research postholders at three vet schools, and our trustees which include a leading professor of feline medicine.

CP is the largest rehomer of cats in the UK, homing almost 60,000 cats a year. Of the ADCH charities (the overview group of large and small animal charities in the UK) we constitute around 25% of all animals (and around 40-50% of all cats) homed in the UK.

@the poster who works at Newdigate Veterinary Group.... if you are referring to our main site at Chelwood Gate, it may interest you to know this is the largest rescue cattery in Europe and is also the charity's national resource for cats transferred from other locations which may have been involved in rescue or cruelty cases, hoarding etc. It is therefore natural that there will be a small numer of contagious disease cases. The same is also true to a lesser extent of all the CP sites and also our branches. We are a rescue charity and deal with the cats and problems that other either refuse to, or in many cases don't even know exist.

Rescue charities are by no means "all the same, full of chlamydia and flu", I know as I have worked with them for over 15 years; and I am sure there are many, many healthy rescue cats you may have treated in your practice (some which you may not even know were rescue cats) which do not and have not had such conditions.

If you would like to contact me I can arrange for you to have a look round our site and hopefully this will provide you with a bit more first hand knowldege and guide you before you make further misleading comments on professional forums. I can also provide you details of our Minimum Veterinary Standards which apply to all cats in our care. My email is ian.macfarlaine@cats.org.uk

To the OP - there is no legal set period for retaining strays except dogs, at CP we recommend 14 days as a good guideline for anything, based on our experiences in the past, and make sure evrything you take in is signed into and out of your care by the finder and adopter.

Re: rehoming strays and the law

You are legal owners after 7 days, but can not change chip details unitl day 30.

Very sad story a few months ago -dog warden collected stray dog scanned for chip and there was one but for some reason - wires crossed between staff I believe - owner never contacted and dog rehomed. Owners had even phoned the kennels to reports the dog lost but then only found out the dog was there over a week later - too late! People decided to let the new owners keep the dog as it had settled with them and were just grateful they knew what had happened to it. Made me mad - why do we even bother chipping.

Re: rehoming strays and the law

I was talking to the dog warden the other day and he said they've got a dog in who is so vicious they have to move him with a dog-grabber to clean his kennel (poor dog must be terrified ) he said they'll keep him for a week and them have him PTS if no owner comes forwards

My friend took a stray cat to her local vet practice to get it scanned for a microchip......she was told by the receptionist to put it back where she found it !!!!!!
Yup - we got told that too.. but it was a kitten roughly about 12wks old!! there was no way we were going to tell the client to take him back 'where he found him!".. so we kept him in the kennela and rehomed him ourselfs - he now lives with one of the nurses aunties :)
If they are young / old / injured/ ill/ rabbit / small pet / dog then we Obviously don't do that! At the moment we have a male tabby that had open injuries to his hocks when he came in... he's been in 4-5 wks........a really sweet blind, old, stinky breath, awful teeth, even awfuller (excuse the spelling!) flea dermititis skin with 2ndry infn tabby(we think!) DSH..... initially really really scard when she came in because of being blind but now loves her cage, loves her bed, loves us, loves her food- eating like a pig and purrs constantly. We have only had her since Monday... assuming she has been abandoned because of her skin.. the O's house must be heaving with fleas! and also a rabbit which we've had for 3-4 wks.

My point being that we only have 6 cat cages, 6 dog cages and some collapsable/ spare cages and some lager cat voyagers so we are limited with space.... CPL/ WGAS/ RSPCA / most other rehoming places are choccablock at the moment and aren't taking in anything and we can't just keep taking all and sundry in because we would run out of space! So we take what we can and have to deal with the rest in the best way that we think

Re: rehoming strays and the law
Yup - we got told that too.. but it was a kitten roughly about 12wks old!! there was no way we were going to tell the client to take him back 'where he found him!".. so we kept him in the kennela and rehomed him ourselfs - he now lives with one of the nurses aunties :)

Re: rehoming strays and the law

My friend took a stray cat to her local vet practice to get it scanned for a microchip......she was told by the receptionist to put it back where she found it !!!!!!

Tried to put a cat on RSPCA waiting list the other day we had had the cat for only couple of days and the person that bought the cat in was keen to have her. RSPCA told us that there was a long waiting list probably 6-8 weeks and if this lady wanted the cat to let her have her straight away before she lost interest!!
