I work mainly in ECC and think that it would be easier than rectal temps in sone of our px as less invasive, are they accurate i wonder?

They state 1oC lower in human medicine so I guess the same for animals? We do use them occasionally in the ECC practice I work in as less invasive but you do sometimes have to repeat the process a couple of times to get a realistic reading! Plus our one is in Farenheit and I can't figure out how to change it!!

Re: digital ear thermometers

i guess i will save my cash and stick with the rectal ones - cheers

Re: digital ear thermometers

I got a digital thermometer from Centaur but don't really like it...i want a decent one if someone can recommend one!

Re: digital ear thermometers

I've got a quick thermometer.
Has anyone got rectal thermometers that work quickly? we've got digital thermometers but they seem to take ages to read and lots of animal's hate sitting still for that long.

When I had an operation the nurses did obs a few times a day, they used an ear thermometer, stuck a disposable cap on, stuck it in my ear, and 3 seconds later they had they temp, sooooo quick and easy!!!

Re: digital ear thermometers

We have used them in the past but found that we were mostly getting low readings.
I personally like my 5 second rectal thermometer

Re: digital ear thermometers

We ran a trial with 1 last year on the MoD working dogs and didn't get great results. That may have been to do with the quality of the reader???? And I can't remember the make of it!!! We took resting temps of the dogs and then repeated it after working. We took rectal and ear thermometer readings and compared them. The ear temp nearly always read a lower temp than the rectal readings. The dogs obviously tolerated the eat thermometer better which was a bonus but the readings were hit and miss x
