I am ashamed to say I assumed all IDchip companies were 24-7 and, having seen this, have made a point of checking our company. Luckily we deal with PetLog which does have a 24-7 surgery but I will be informing clients of this fact now so they are aware of the difference.
Petlog I always assummed that all companies were 24/7, will have to look if my cats are! Petlog have an online service, so you can look for chip details online (must be auth agent/vet to do that) Used it a couple of times this year, I even put them straight online, meaning the animal is instantly registered. Client's love that fact!

Re: Microchips and changes of owners

I am ashamed to say I assumed all IDchip companies were 24-7 and, having seen this, have made a point of checking our company.

Id agree with that, have to say initially I knew very little and just assumed that all chip suppliers offered a 24hr service to vets as well as pets.

I think as a pet owner Id be a tad peeved if I wasnt told by my practice what service the chip company offered. I think Id automatically expect the practice to know.

Re: Microchips and changes of owners

One of the companies - has changed in that they now offer a 24hr service for professionals but not for members of the public/pet owners.

I think as well that vet surgeries should be checking what services thier microchip supplier offer eg do they provide 24hr cover! Clients go on the basis of what their practice recommends and clients assume they are gettting a good service and think they are doing the right thing by chipping their pet.Of course regardless a chipped pet is better than a non chipped pet!

Re: Microchips and changes of owners

I have home, mobile and work number on Jacks tag. I'd be very interested to know what company does work 24/7...will be changing if i can!!!

Re: Microchips and changes of owners
Sandra that is awful! I always assumed that they were there 24/7...that's what they're there for for gods sake!
Unfortunately Vicky, they are not all 24/7, there are a good few companies ho are not and my chips on my animals are one of them. I have however found out that I can change over to a company that does provide 24/7 for a fee of 10 pounds, so I am going to do that. At the moment I have tags detailing my home , mobile and ork details as well as stating that my pet is insured and microchipped, so if she goes missing again and is involved in a RTA hopefully they will read her tag and give her all the tmt she requires.

This has happened a few times to me, but I also have my own bugbear with microchip companies.....esp the ones who dont provide 24/7 cover for missing pets!!! whats the bloody point in microchipping them if the place does not answer the phone but puts you through to an answering service... thats just not good enough in my book.

My dog went missing and I tried calling the company....all night and I was still not getting an answer at 9.30 the following day... now what would have happened if my dog had been seriously injured in an RTA and taken to a vets who were not mine? the vet would obviosly not be able to get hold of me as the company would still be in bed!!!!! so my dog would only get emergency first aid, which as we all know sometimes is not enough.

Re: Microchips and changes of owners

This would never happen with Millie. As it was she was microchipped but the owners had since moved away and we tried contacting the phone numbers and writing to the adress without any response. I took her on and had to write a couple of letters from both myself and my vet practice to change microchip details but i felt terrible knowing my cat had once been loved enough to have her chipped. I only hope there was a viable reason as to why they were uncontactable as i would hate them to still be living in hope that she returned

Re: Microchips and changes of owners

There needs to be a way of vets scanning every new pet that comes through the door and checking the details match..I know it is time consuming but how else are they going to police compulsory microchipping without these kind of situations occuring?!

We had a lady who picked up a cat at the side of the road because she thought it looked like her cat that had gone missing a few months previously..she brought it straight in asking for it to be microchipped because she didnt want to loose it again only when the vet scanned the cat to check for a chip it already had one registered to someone who lived on the street where the cat had been picked up!! If that cat hadn't of been microchipped this lady was so insistant it was her cat she would have taken it home with her in effect stealing a cat that she thought was hers but wasn't! And as a vets I don't think we could have done anything because its their word you have to go on.

Re: Microchips and changes of owners

A dog is property, wherefore this dog was possibly stolen, it should be investigated. The new owners are handling stolen goods, and therefore liable under the law.

Had a case myself of what I thought was a stolen dog, the police gave me a ref and recc I tell the owner to report it stolen and seemed to take my request seriously. Thankfully it was a case of mis-communication, and it ended happiely. The mobile number was incorrect, so I'd had to write a letter to the address. What if I hadn't of bothered? Do many people write if they can't get through on the phone?

It's something that will put people off microchipping their pets.

Re: Microchips and changes of owners

That's really sad God i don't know what i'd do if that happened to Jack and I...

Re: Microchips and changes of owners

We have had this situation twice in the last couple of months, both with cats.
