I totally agree, I thought it was a load of cr*p! I did mine at a different centre to you as well so can only assume that they are all the same. I learnt more in 10 minutes of talking to another clinical coach in my practice, which I had to do after the course as had no clue about what to do with the npl at all!

Was a bit "airy fairy" how to give non judgemental feedback, and how to enterpret learning styles, open questioning etc. non of us came out if the course feeling like we had gained anything valuable really. Considering the cost!

I found the same about the CC course. We covered nothing on the npl and it was just about learning styles and other stuff that was just so boring I don't think I took anything in! The coaching diary, if it's the same thing I had to do was just a written log of all the things you teach the student and like progression updates etc

Hartpury college as it was the nearest... If there was anything nearer we would have opted. Apparently I have to do a coaching diary but haven't got a clue where to start or what exactly is expected!

Just done my cc training for a day, really wasn't that impressed with the course at all, it never touched on any of the npl or much related to veterinary, the course just seemed very psychological (sp) I now have to do a coaching diary and really have no idea where to start and apparently have to be assess in practice too... But still not quite sure.,

Hey Miss SJ,

All I can say about the CC course is it took me longer to get there and back than I spent doing any 'training'! Don't worry about the training day (3 hours) it is very basic so you'll ace it.

I find the hugest 'OMG' moments are when I have to balance (juggle) being a CC alongside my normal nursing. A classroom environment cannot prepare you for that, you just have to find your own rhythm so to speak! Neither can it prepare you for all the studying (I felt) needed to be done. This just doesn't get done in the normal day and so I was doing a lot outside of work. I am not alone, other CC colleagues of mine report having to do stuff outside of 'normal' (when are our hours of work ever normal? ha ha) working hours. It is simply to do yourself and your student proper justice. It's not ideal but it is understandable because we all work in busy environments when having 'free-time' to do necessary 'paperwork' just ain't available...

My best tip? When you get back into practice... once you've got your NPL login.....which can take time to receive (still). .. remember to ask for, and ensure you receive, the support you need from your bosses; be that overtime reward, equipment, a helping hand - whatever it is you need to succeed.

Finally, from me to you, a reassuring hug, I'm certain it's got chocolate in it so it is extra special, ha ha ha!. You are a fab nurse and, (if my opinion counts for anything at all), your students will fare very well under your guidance and tutelage.

It depends of the training provider / college for the clinical coach training. some only require you to complete half a day training to go through the NPL technical side of things and update you regarding the new regime.

Unlike with the A1 you do not need to have been qualified for x number of years before becoming a Clinical Coach. You simply need to be qualified. However, it may be that some colleges will only provide training to those who have been qualified for at least a year. This is a college requirement and not a requirement of the RCVS.

If you did the D32/33 or A1 qualification then this does not automatically make you a Clinical Coach. You are required to do the training as the idea behind a Clinical Coach is different to that of the assessor.

So what happens if your already an A1? Do you automatically qualify as a mentor/ clinical coach? Or do you have to take yet another course to prove that you can do the job you are already trained and qualified to do?

A clinical coach trains, assesses and mentors a SVN for the RCVS nursing qualification. They are the equivalent to an NVQ assessor, which have now been phased out due to the new style qualification.

An RVN or Vet can train as a clinical coach, the VNAC usually requires at least 1 years experience post qualification, but different VNAC's vary in their requiremens and the RCVS have guidelines for them to comply with.

2 years ago I managed to start my assessor training with only 6 months experience under special circumstances as my practice only had 1 other assessor and 3 students.

Went on the clinical coach a few weeks back and they said you had to have a minimum of 1 years post qualification experience.

I would however check with your VNAC as everyone seems to say different these days!

Definately have to be an RVN or MRCVS but no stipulation on time just the phrase "professionally mature"

Yes our college says they have to be qualified for 1yr as well. I think this is RCVS stipulation but again, check with your VNAC to check what they require.

Think RCVS guidelines are sketchy and ust saying experienced but our college are saying 1 year qualified.

From what I remember of the course you had to be a RVN or MRCVS registered, dont remember them mentioning any time limit of being registered. I would just phone the college your students go to.
