I need to know how to prepare an endoscope for use. We do not have an endoscope in practice and have never had the privilige of using one, so could someone please

Re: endoscope prep
Sounds good to me Phrin. Just one point with regards to the fibre optic light source box shouldn't be switched on and off within a short period of time. Also taught that the light source box shouldn't be moved once switched off until cooled. All these steps reduce the risk of the light bulb exploding!

Ooo will bear that in mind for our scope!

Re: endoscope prep

i know what u mean about researching, but I have looked up in books, on web etc and cant find anythin constructive, I mainly wanted your hands on experience. We dont have any books in practice on this subject as we dont have one. I am at college tomorrow so will have another look in library.

Fingers crossed i get to go to this other practice soon

cheers again

Re: endoscope prep
To prepare a basic endoscope the main points as far as portfolio is concerned would be, I reckon, off the top of my head mind!

[... sorry I've deleted this bit, as I do think that part of portfolio Q&A is about researching.....]

However, can you not spend a morning at a neighbouring practice to get hands on experience? Your IV centre should be able to arrange this for you, especially if it is necc for portfolio completion!
Was that a bit mean of me?

To prepare a basic endoscope the main points as far as portfolio is concerned would be, I reckon, off the top of my head mind!

- ensure scope is clean and has been sterilised appropriatley since last patient (ie Meddis

- plug light box in and ensure is working properly - check PAT test sticker is in date

- place lightbox in appropriate place

-carefully position scope in a suitable position

- plug scope into light box

- switch light box on

- look down scope to ensure not damaged

- switch scope off

- ensure all necc equip is close to hand for procedure, ie for biopsies etc

However, can you not spend a morning at a neighbouring practice to get hands on experience? Your IV centre should be able to arrange this for you, especially if it is necc for portfolio completion!

Oh you are a life saver! I dont actually need to use an endoscope to complete the portfolio as i have covered all diagnostic imaging with use of x-rays and ultrasound. I have arranged with another practice to go in when they next have a patient in but i am just on such a tight schedule with the portfolio deadline that i really needed to get this done.

Thanks again everyone for your help, knew i could count on u guys!

Re: endoscope prep

Sounds good to me Phrin.
