It was maybe her idea of 'humour' (in my experience as a farm orientated person some largie vets, but not all of them, can have a very different sense of humour,some a tad blunt), or often I feel folk that cant do something (as she said she hadnt a clue about calculations) can be quick to put a dampener on those than can as a way of making themselves feel better.

Easy for me to say but Id try to laugh it off and think that the days of attaching any size of pet to a litre bag of hartmans and letting it run it at a rate of knots is long over and thank the stars for that!

I worked with a vet once who on one fateful day termed us 'Lay staff' .. errr .. BIG mistake!!

A vet is nothing without a team of nurses. Most of the one's I know have no clue how to deal with computers/reception/payments/setting up for operations/calculations/TLC

dont take it to heart - I suppose there was a lot of theoretical and practical tasks just invented to keep trainee vets busy when she was training too.

Just keep reminding yourself they'd we lost without us. We've been very short on nurses lately, and over run with vets, its quite funny watching them pair up and trying to set up for procedures and just not having a clue where anything's kept, and forgetting important things

I too would feel upset about a comment like that! But then I would probably pipe up and explain just why fluid therapy rates are so important! As Nick says, the smaller the patient, the higher the risk of over infusion!

Are they a solely LA vet? If so I notice they don't tend to work out IVFT rates, just open the valve.... which is fine for a severley dehydrated 150kg calf..... not so much for a 1.5kg emaciated cat!

I wouldn't take their comment to heart - you know and we know that IVFT rates are vitally important.

Hey there

Totally understand where you are coming, some vets seem to just seem to have to say stuff for the sack of it.

Personally I don't think fluid calculations are 'just there to keep nurses busy' Over infusion is particularly dangerous in our feline patients. over infusion/miscalculation can cause a patient to drown!

Please don't feel under-minded or belittled by this vet.

I can understand you being annoyed, i would be too. Has just taken a while for me to figure out what 'f.t' meant...oh dear
