I feel so stupid...
I had my first day at college yesterday and we started anatomy and physiology. We were doing about Serosa and Body cavities. I can do the cavities and I understand all the anatomical directions etc, but I just can get

Re: First day at college...HELP!!

You are right - the serosa/serous membrane in the thoracic cavity is called the pleura and in the abdomen it is called the peritoneum.

Hope that helps

Rimmer RVN

Well, if I tell you what notes I've got, could you tell me if I've got it right or not...

All the body cavities and organs in the cavities are lined with a layer of membrane, this is made up by a simple layer of epithelium which is supported by connective tissue.

The epithelial cell produce a small amount of fluid (serous fluid) and the membrane is called a serous membrane or serosa.

So I get this bit, just about. But am I right in thinking that the serosa is called different thungs in different cavities?

        Thanks x

Re: First day at college...HELP!!

Thats one way to get me to revise!!! I am coming up to my exams in Nov!
Body cavities are something i found hard to understand and get my head
around. The way i tried to understand it was the Serosa (Or serous membranes) is like a bag. Everything in that bag (All the organs etc) have to be wrapped in the same bag. For example, The lungs, heart (All in thorax/chest area) are in a serosa membrane (the bag) but the bag is touching every part of each surface of the organ.

The function of it is to provide a little fluid to help with the movement, FOr example, , the lungs when breathing in and out,,,, the serosa will provide a bit of serous fluid whihc will act a lubrication to stop the lungs "rubbing" and make them move easier.

Does that make any more sense? I know it may seem daunting when you dont understand it all on your first day but as you go into more detail and further on in the course... it will all fall into place (Thats what i found!). It will probably make more sence when you have covered the basic cells and tissues so you know more about how it is made up.

Feel free to ask any more questions. (You can PM if easier!)

Re: First day at college...HELP!!

dont feel stupid, however, im not entirely sure what it is you want to know. let me know and i will try and help you
