So I've been out of practice for approx. 3 years now. I decided to re-register and see if I can get back into 'cos I've been missing it.

I have been working on and off in the emergency service in my area but it is now finished and VetsNow are taking over. This was my only link to the veterinary world. It has helped me get back into the swing of things and I've seen the new drugs out since I left so I'm glad I've been doing it.

My problem is, I started to apply for a job just now and found the whole application process to be very intimidating! I ended up leaving it and hopefully I'll go back to it later this week.

I think I'm too scared to apply 'cos I just think they'll automatically poo-poo me for being out of practice for so long. Is it worth it? What does everyone else think? What would you do if a QVN applied but she'd been out of it for this long?

I know the worst that could happen is I could be told no. But, what if I get the job and just really suck at it and disappoint them or freak myself out?

Do you think it'd be worth contacting some practices and see if they'd let me go in for a few days voluntarily to get back to the normal practice routine?

[/quote]

Go for it!

I was out of small animal practice for seven years looking after my children. It was hard at first, but if you get a decent boss and do lots of CPD it can be done!

Re: Application process is intimidating

why not apply for a quiet first opinion practice first and on interview just be honest and say that you are looking to get back into the swing of things maybe shadow a senior nurse for a little while... it'l all come flooding back to you and you will wonder what you were worried about!!

Whatever you decide to do, good luck...

If its something you want don't let cold feet get in the way! x

Re: Application process is intimidating

Give it another go! Three years isn't long in the grand scheme, mostly there will be changes in that new drugs are out but if you've been doing emergency work your skills won't be stale so you shouldn't have a problem there.

Lots of jobs around for QVNs at the moment but if you would feel more confident doing some voluntary work before applying I'm sure plenty of practices would be interested.

Good Luck!
