in the east midlands the price has gone up.

bad summer = shortage and some not very good stuff either.

i do feel sorry for the hay makers as it must be very hard for them.

Up here in Scotland has been a nightmare and yes prices ranging from 4-8pound a bale! I'm hoping prices go down soon as costing a fortune and also really difficult to get a hold of at the min :-(

Having spent the past two days making hay after the only weeks worth of summer weather since June. I can finally breathe a sigh of relief! Though I'd never get any made!

We normally pay about £2.50 a bale. I know there's been a shortage of decent hay so far because of the bad summer, hopefully prices will start coming down - and the quality is good enough for your horse!

as far as I am aware no shortages round here either (north Lincolnshire) in fact a friend of mine had a couple of cuts off his fields this year (good stuff) its going at 3 - 3.50 a bale locally

The farm where \i keep my horse prodices his own and as far as Im aware no shortages round here. Paying £3 per bale as normal.

I would check where you stand bringing in a lorry load of hay from another country as it is plant items and countries are pretty fussy.

Oh forgot to say a friend of mine has family in south france and they have hundreds of bales and no-one to buy it and its way cheaper than here, so if you're willing to spend the expense of taking a lorry to france it may work out cost-effective!

I'm in west sussex and own 4 horses & 1 minature, all through august my 16.2hh mare was on box rest eating nearly a bale a day! At the beginning of august we were paying £6 a bale! with some quoting up to £11 for a small bale! Our 2 regular suppliers had sold out straight away (annoyed that they didnt save any for us!) but fortunatly found a supplier who was selling at £4 a bale and its good quality so we have paid for £200 outright (normally buy it in lots of 40 throughout the winter) and luckily he is storing it for us untill we need it because we have limited storage. He has sold out now as have nearly everyone else. Feed merchants are selling at £5-6/bale and only allowing 2/4 bales at a time.

Thank god my mare is doing ok and now out at grass 24/7 (luckily the grass has grown!) but if anything happens again that will require box rest were gonna be really stuck cus the remainder of the hay is only just gona get us thro winter and thats feeding it sparingly!

I say stock up on fast fibre (pellets that need soaking for 30seconds) and chaff cus its worrying that they may run out as well if people cant get hold of hay.
