I'm currently the HVN of a small clinic - me as VN and two nursing assistants. Essentially I do pretty much everything VN and admin-wise.
Over the last 12 months, things have been pretty turbulant

Re: Holiday Issues

Thanks Caro, I'll make some enquiries. I think it wouldn't hurt to know exactly where I stand on all of this.

The good news is tho, that I've had the holiday granted. So a little less stress but one hell of a fight to get it!

Re: Holiday Issues

I would still take legal advice due to what happened and the way it was done and as to sacking she would be a prize plank if she tried THAT one would cost your practice a lot of money it still can if you wanted to take the bullying further and it was bullying/abuse blatantly so.

Maybe my problem is that now l just wont take it and lots of folks are nervous so above is easy to say but good luck in whatever yoyu do.

Re: Holiday Issues
Thanks for the replies guys.

Essentially the contracts were changed after we had to let a vet go for gross misconduct. After she was sacked, she basically came in threatening staff and spreading vicious stuff around town to anyone who would listen. To combat issues raised by the vets' sacking, the contracts were changed.

I didn't know that she couldn't just change the contracts, she presented them to me on a weds and said she wanted them back by the fri. Like a bunch of wallies, we all signed them. The only thing that has essentially changed is the holiday notice period and for me, if I get sacked (God forbid) I have 1 week to vacate the practice flat. I thought that was a bit harsh but she reckoned the likelihood of me getting sacked was not worth mentioning.....

Anyhow, my holiday used to run from July to July (I started at the practice end of July 6 years ago). Due to the new contract the holiday for everyone now runs from Jan - Jan. I wasn't able to take holiday before July so this has been carried over to the new contract, making the 15 days outstanding to be taken before Jan 1st. The PM thinks this will be easier for everyone involved. I have to say that I'm not convinced.

I've had a bit of a rough day to be honest, I've only just learned that my holiday has been approved but it wasn't without a fight - the cost of a locum is an issue for the practice but TBH, that's not really my fault. I've reached burn out and just need to take my foot off the gas for a while. I gave the required notice so what's the problem? One issue that had me tearing my hair out earlier was the fact that I was meant to be working the weekend at the end of my holiday (we are such a small team that the nurses just generally swap weekends so noone has to take two days holiday for 8 hours worked). The girl who said she would cover me told me that she can no longer do so. As you can imagine, I was incandescent with rage!!!

After a bit of rota juggling (more than I could be doing with) the holiday has now been granted, including cover for the weekend in question.

Phew, I hope that covers most things. Thanks again for your replies guys, it really helps being able to turn to people who are way more clued up on these things than I.

D x
thanks for that

the reason i asked was if you had had the opportunity to take holiday but had refused because say it wasnt when you wanted it - then practice could turn round and say you had the chance and didnt take it. The fact that you didnt have the opportunity to take would put you in a better position to be given holiday. Hope that makes sense?

re your flat - can I ask if you pay rent on it at all or do you have to pay tax as benefits in kind at all or any bills? I have lived in practice accom a few times and the laws regarding it can be a minefield. A week is not a long time to find somewhere else to live if it comes down to it. PM me if you like

Re: Holiday Issues

If the cost of getting a locum to cover your holiday is an issue, what are you supposed to do about it?? It is totally illegal to just change things. I suggest you contact either bvna or acas for legal help.

Regards holiday that is also part of the contract iof there was an agreement in place again proper legal advice.

also I dont understand the changing everybodys contract bit - ie does everybody know their contract is to be changed? will it help this situation? and has it been discussed with your team?
