Am i right??

So it sounds as though u went to the next person up as u couldnt go directly to the hn as it was her u needed to talk about.

Glad its all sorted now though, but im not sure there was any reason to appologise as u were making them aware that she wasnt dealing with inpatients to the practice standards.

Your director has gone way over the top regarding this, and this will now make you not want to approach them again as they didnt help.

As caro said, u could always look for another job now ur qualified, as u r very valuable now, and practices are crying out for newly qualifieds

Re: too over sensitive?
I am in a similar position in which it is very very hard to voice my concerns to the right people. I thought for a while just to shut up and get on with it but i felt that would be like me saying "oh well, i don't care" and i do care and by sounds of things you do to. Sometimes saying things to the bosses a bit differently can make them sit up and listen. Where you were correctly concerned for your patients, sometimes manangement who maybe aren't on the frontline of patient care don't see or understand the problem where they may be more concerned about finances etc. Wording things differently i find helps. i.e focusing more on potential client complaints about care in practice, if clients knew or found out there pet wasn't given the care they expected it may damage client relations.

Don't take no for an answer if your concerned but be diplomatic in your approach, i know some practices have SOPs for internal complaints/greivances and the ones i have seen usually suggest tackling problems lower down with line managers or the person directly (again in diplomatic maner!) As for the career change i think you need a change of practice! Unfortunatly there are worse things that happen in the profession but i don't agree with what happened but as mentioned maybe your new HN was abit swamped with e.g paperwork, rotas etc? Could you change the patients before you leave at night? Then saying to her you've done it for her may ease relations?

Hope you get on ok.x

Re: too over sensitive?

no - its not about not saying anything - its about saying what you need to say to the right person

Re: too over sensitive?

Well since it all happened me and the hn apologised to each other and we are now both over it. Its not the fact of this situation which is upsettin me as I no now I shouldn't of gone straight to a director. Wots upsetting me is the director won't let it go and it was the director who said about me rethinkin my career and the one who rang to see if I had passed and not the other student.
Hello all,
just wanted to vent some anger and sadness. i have just recently qualified (whoop whoop) but a few weeks ago we had a new head nurse join us who really nice but i noticed she wasnt cleaning out the inpatients overnight, so i carried on and just tried to give her the benefit of the doubt she continued not to do so.
i decided to take one of the directors aside and just mentioned it to them one on one so no1 else could hear, anyways i thought nothing of it.

the next couple of days i was taken into the office by the director who proceeded to tell me i was bang out of order saying something and am always negative (no sure when i have been) and that the other directors were concerned i was stressed and therefore not coping properly, to really add salt to the wounds she then said i should poss re think my career?? at that point i walked out and began to cry as it was hard to think some1 had questioned what i was tryin to work towards, i got over it and carried on as normal.

once i got my results to say i had qualified she rang up to ask how i had done in which i said i had passed and she said well done and she had already presumed the other 2nd year had qualified so basically she didnt think i had and just wanted confirmation.

am i being too over sensitive?? i just feel shes picking on me for that one comment i said to her in private
Is your HN an experienced HN or is this her first HN position - she may be feeling a little let down herself right now?

did your HN actually say that she didnt think you had passed or is that what you thought she was implying?

I can understand her being a bit upset at your going over her head on the overnight patient care - maybe it would have been better to have a quiet word with her first (but hindsight is a wonderful thing sometimes) - it might be that as you have discussed this and she has heard it from one of the directors she now doesnt know if you are the sort of person who will accept her as a HN or if you are going to continually ignore her and take your queries or concerns to the directors.

The directors may also be a bit peed off a) because they may have employed a HN that has been reported as possibly not doing her job properly ( and how do you know she hasnt had a telling off for that which isnt going to improve the working relationship between you both?)

or b) you as a student nurse have decided to bypass the heirarchy they have put in place to deal with problems.

I can see your point of view but also that of the HN. If you were to become a HN how would you deal with this situation?

would it be an idea to just ask to have a quiet word and say that you are sorry you have both started off on the wrong foot and try and clear the air a little? - sorry is sometimes the hardest word to say and the easiest way of sorting what looks like an intractable problem

whatever you decide I hope it works out for you
