&lt;p&gt;They were obviously moved into a spare clean tank as soon as I noticed the problem, their tank has been scrubbed and thoroughly disinfected and they have gone back into it today.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It only seems to be a small patch on Arnold which I suspected may be bacterial but that ammonia scald also seems possible. I am always wary putting fish &amp;#39;medicines&amp;#39; into the water, from past experience it seems to kill rather than cure!&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;There are drops you can get to go in the water, but I can&amp;#39;t remember what they&amp;#39;re called. &lt;br /&gt;They were dark blue, almost like a dye, but did the trick. &lt;/p&gt;
