I use it here cause l never use it any place else. Same as my vn sometimes l remember to use it most times l don't. So l decided if l used them here l didn't have to remember as it was on my profile and did not require thought. I really should be more reverend of my post nominals.

That is exactly how i feel. To the general public who don't know what it means they are probably going to assume you've got an extra qualification...when you haven't.

Sorry was meant to add that I had the post nominals as an ANA at the end of that, didn't make sense otherwise!! Don't know if it has changed recently though reading the above statement, it looks as though it probably has.

It's changed in the last couple of years because I know that everyone used to be able to use them.

I rarely use post nominals except for work related things at work/CVs etc. I wouldn't have RVN after my name on my cheque book or anything!

I read that as saying you can use MBVNA if you are a qualified VN and ANA's can use the ANA post nominals. It doesn't mention the MBVNA post nominals for ANA's.

I don't use MBVNA as I don't really see the point. All it means is that you are a member of an organisation and doesn't show a qualification. I rarely use my BSc (Hons) either to be honest.

From BVNA site:

You can use the post-nominals MBVNA if you are a fully qualified VN or an honorary member (also a qualified VN). Qualified ANA's can use the ANA post nominal.

The post-nominals have been introduced to show membership to a professional organisation, which demonstrates commitment to veterinary nursing, as well as access to professional representation, news and CPD.

It seems that providing you have either a VN or ANA qualification you can use the post nominals, presumably students without the ANA qual can't?? Students will know for definite as the post nominals will be on their VNJ when it arrives if they are eligible

I'm sure I had a letter when I was an SVN saying I wasn't to use the post nominals until I was qualified as people were using them and members of the public were thinking it meant they had qualifications.

I've read that too, which is why I don't have MBVNA on my username here, as I am still an SVN

The only advantage I can see to the MBVNA post nominals are that they show any potential employers etc that you are commited enough to the profession to be a member of the BVNA - not that that means an awful lot, as I'm sure there are plenty of commited nurses out there who would love to be MBVNA but can't afford the subscription or don't join for whatever reason.

I personally don't see the point of 'MBVNA'...can someone explain? Confused as to why people would use it? I am a member but don't/won't use it cos i don't feel it shows anything, other than you pay a subscription?

Listed nurses are the original nurses ( well after the RANAs anyway) - a listed nurse is fully qualified and allowed to carry out schedule 3. RVNs are basically anybody that qualified after 2003 because they were forced onto the register. Members of the list can opt to go on the register. The register basically means that you are responsible for your own actions and that that you will carry out a minimum of cpd. I am not against registration but as it stands now there are far too many loopholes and things that havnt been thought through sufficiently. If somebody could sort out the bloody mess it is now I would gladly join the register.

Ah I guess I'll have to wait a bit longer!! I hope the RCVS dont take too long!

I'm still a bit confused about the list though... So if you qualified before 2003 and opted to stay on the list rather than register are you still allowed to carry out Sch 3 procedures?

What do you mean by this statement Steph?

I'd be happy to call you a veterinary nurse awaiting, but not a VN as that means you have the post nominals of a listed VN ie you have your name on the list of Veterinary Nurses.

Hope this makes sense. I know I'm prob being picky, but hey!

I 'qualified' recently too and sent my registration off a few weeks ago and im still in blue-my employers say we really shouldnt be wearing green uniform until I have my badge because it is deceiving sometimes because our clients see that all qualifieds wear green uniform and Im actually not qualified until I receive my cert and badge. If I was qualified for a longer time I would be pretty peed off if someone who wasnt qualified was wearing qualified's uniform!! Im happy waiting just that little bit longer.

Im my current practice we do (ordered my green tunics the day I passed). In my last practice everyone wore green so it didn't make a difference.

The letter I received from RCVS with my exam results said under no circumstances could I call myself a veterinary nurse until I was registered. Unfortunately you are still classed as a student until on the register. It also states somewhere that post-nominals may only be used once you have received the letter that states you are officially on the register. I got mine last Thursday, yay!!

I actually disagree with this quite strongly - until you are accepted onto the register then dont use the post nominals that come with being on the register. Fair enough you have waited a long time to get them, so surely another few weeks wont make any difference. But neither should you be calling yourself a VN as that is a listed nurse which you are not and will never be. The suggestion that you can call yourself VN now is in my mind quite insulting to those of us on the list already and may falsly indicate that your name is already on the list.
