I have an ANA working at our practice. She has been with us a number of years. She was doing her ana training when our practice was taken over and she was moved out into reception where she currently is working now.

'A member of staff adequately trained in monitoring patients under general anaesthetic must be present throughout the procedure'.

'A trained member of staff, other than the surgeon, must be present to monitor the patient throughout the general anaesthetic. Evidence of suitable training must be provided if the member of staff is not a Listed/Registered veterinary nurse'.

Can I also say that Tier2 practices don't always employ unqualified staff, as your comment above suggests. I work in a Tier2 practice where every nurse is qualified, plus 3 reception staff are qualified nurses too!

Re: ANA - what can they do?

The monitoring of the anaesthetics thing I am pretty sure is dependant on the type of practice you are.

If you are a hospital status or tier 3 for eg I would think it was a no no for the ANA to be monitoring, I also think that if there are qualified staff there then it is probably a no as well.

There are practices that only employ unqualified staff such as tier2 they do not need to have qualified staff and can have unqualified personel monitoring the anaesthetic under the vets direction.

Re: ANA - what can they do?

From what I understand, the GA must be under vets direction, ie they act as the vets hand, the vet says turn up/down. I think the nurse can monitor, inform the vet and they advise if they what to do. It sounds like anyone (joe bloggs/un enrolled nurse) can be "the hand of Vet" I don't know :o/

At least that's how I see it, please someone tell me if I'm wrong :o/

Re: ANA - what can they do?

Really everything you mention is suitable for an ANA to do providing they are trained in those areas (i.e monitoring recovery patients). As for GA monitoring, the RCVS says any 'trained' personnel can do this including Joe Bloggs who's been in the job for a month having just left school therefore its really up to each practice to decide if they want/have to use unqualified staff for this.

Generally the ANA job role is to assist staff in areas such as:

caring for inpatients - cleaning kennels, grooming, feeding, TLC

restraint for procedures

sterilising kits, preparing theatre/equipment

From what you say she would be getting involved in plenty in practice so shouldn't think it would be uninteresting.

Re: ANA - what can they do?
Is she unable to monitor anaesthetics? All of our anaesthetics are well monitored with ecg, capnography etc and this is all recorded onto monitoring charts. She has a sound knowledge of all of these things.
See now, this is a really grey area as far as I'm concerned, I was looking on the RCVS site earlier & saw this:

http://www.rcvs.org.uk/shared_asp_files/GFSR.asp?NodeID=97577

So technically, according to that, she shouldn't be monitoring GA's, but can do post op monitoring...
