I wouldn't really feel comfortable doing boosters anyway so I need info to present to PM in my favour so that don't have to do them!

However they have now stopped doing it as they found out that we shouldnt technically be doing it! I did them for 5 and a half years though and thought it was totally the norm

Re: Nurses giving boosters

[quote user="Sal (the 1st) Holesworth VN CMH Chyp (M)PNLP"]

Nurses can give 2nd vaccination as the examination has been carried out by a veterinary surgeon and primary vaccination course has been started by them and in giving the 2nd vaccination the nurse is administering a treatment which has already been prescribed.

vaccination records can be signed by a qualified nurse to record that the vaccination has been given HOWEVER if the vaccination record is also a certificate it will have to be signed by a vet

boosters should not be given by a nurse unless an examination has been carried out by a vs prior to vaccination - so unless you have something like a two consult room set up and a vaccination clinic where vet does the check and nurse then goes in to do vaccine and general advice whilst vet moves on to other room to exam next patient ready for the nurse when she has finished with first patient then it really isnt worth it ( and have to say have worked this system and it is real conveyor belt stuff - clients dont like it!) hope that gives you the info you need

Re: Nurses giving boosters

Boosters should IMHO be carried out by the vet! they need to give a full clinical exam to pick up anything... no probs with 2nd vacc but boosters a no no

Re: Nurses giving boosters

I'm working at a practice which has never run nurse clinics before and we discussed setting them up before I took them job. I discussed areas I'd be happy to cover, clip nails, flea checks, remove sutures, weight clinics, dressing changes, remove ticks, etc...

I spoke to PM today and he said he wants me to set up 'booster clinics'!

Not sure if he's got a bit confused but I thought I'd better get some info on it before we speak about it all.

Re: Nurses giving boosters

I'm sure it falls in with prescription meds, so same as not being able to prescribe abs or Nsaids. THe whole point of booster is for Vet exam.

I used to see clients to discuss dentals or weight loss after vets have checked animal and found a fault that needs discussion. It can mean that you get busy if you have Vet passing over nearly every booster for discussion. However did find that these clients were more likely to listen and take advice, some booked dental treatments or bought product there and then.

Like you wouldn't feel comfortable. Check what they mean by booster clinics.

Thanks for that, in my eyes a vaccination is a vaccination regardless of what condition your administering it for (1st, 2nd, restart, booster) kind of silly really that we are allowed to do some and not others. I'd prefer not to do any at all.

Re: Nurses giving boosters

http://www.vetnurse.co.uk/forums/p/9968/92937.aspx#92937

Re: Nurses giving boosters

I'm sure someone said 2nd vaccs are ok, boosters are a no no.
