Bloody things. The good news is that the spider vac works well for medium sized ones anyway - sucked him up ands blasted him out!

My bathroom is the size of a postage stamp and contains 3 conkers. Apparently this is not enough

Wow this is amazing! I've never heard of conkers being used to repel spiders, how do they do it? I have a massive mexican red kneed tarantula in my house (I did bring her in though) if I put conkers in my house will she get stroppy, pack her bags and leave?

And yes, they ARE highly toxic to cats and dogs so please make sure if you're going to have them around that you do is discreetly and hang them out of the way (the conkers, not the cats and dogs).

Well my green shelled early fallers have just about ripened and burst open into mini conkers now plus I've had everyone at work collecting them for me (they think I'm bonkers but to be fair, I didn't put them right when they thought I was using the conkers to throw at the spiders ). Have had a few teeny weeny money spiders in of later but no mammoth ones since having the conkers (OMG, I pray I haven't just tempted fate by saying that!!!) Having said that, it's just gone a lot colder at night in the past day or so and my heating is now on in the evening so that might bring a few out of the woodwork. Will keep you posted.....

as i understand it yes conkers are toxic - hang them in nets where they cant be touched!

My mum recently told me about the conker/spider thing but as I hadn't heard of it before I told her she was mental!! Oops, looks like I'd better appologies and get me some conkers!!

Does anyone know if chestnuts are toxic to cats? I've 2 who eat absolutely everything!!

yup i also have cats - fat lazy ones! conkers seem to be working ok for me tho and i can tell because of the reduced number of cobwebs. maybe when they are a nice chestnut brown colour and bigger a bit later in the season you will get a better result

Hmmmmm.... Can i assume that most of you who recommended conkers also have cats? Or is it just Peak District spiders which are immune to conkers?Unless my conkers are not ripe enough yet. Either way, I'm not impressed so far as have had three mammoth visitors in the past few days (too big to fit in my spider vac as well!) Back to the drawing board and sleepless nights....

Oh, does anyone know whether that spray stuff works that you can buy from Betterware as have just had a booklet through my door but don't want to throw more moneyaway on the little blighters? How long does it last after each spray or do you have to do it every day etc?

you should be ok re primary school dont forget health and safety says they cant play conkers now!

yes they do work - i am using them now

put them in their spikey skins somewhere warm and wait for them to dry out and open

the big ones should be ready in a monthish
