Hi,

When we were looking at this section in the vet nurse training we were advised that if in the practice handbook/company documents etc there is a policy from the vet that he authorises all repeat px as long as we have seen the animal within 6 months, unless otherwise stated on the notes, this is a way to get around needing to check each and every time.

Just an idea if you're having probs, you can also add something in for flea/worm tx that is prescription only eg if seen within 1-2 yrs (whatever you agree) then they can have more...

Just on the note of signing for off license drugs the owner must sign to say that they are aware that an off lisence drug is being used and the risks associated with THAT drug so the need to sign a document each time they are prescribed an off license product.

Hi Rachel, thanks for that too! From all the info I have read it looks to me as if the Vet has to actually physically make up the meds even if has said can have rerx, would you know where I can find the info re rpts? No worries if not, am still trawling through the reams of gobbledegook anyway!

It's the dispensing that is the grey issue, if a Vet has actually "put-up" the medication on the animal's records - then it's ok for someone to hand them to the client.

Saying that mind, you can get around doing rpt meds if the vet clearly writes in the notes that he/she authorises it.

We do tend to get clients to sign off-license forms, but it covers that animal so they dont have to sign each time one is used. It just makes the client aware that some drugs are not licensed especially when it comes to our small furry friends.

We ask for 24hrs notice so that a vet can dispense. But normally if a client walks in off the street the vet will ok for us to do rpt for example flea and worm control as long as the animal has been vaccinated in the last year. All other drugs, ie NSAIDs must be put through and checked out by the vet.

You are right in that only vets can put anything from NFA-VPS upwards. So all we can dispense is avm-gsl and those drugs that fall into small animal exempt scheme, unless you are a SQP
