The pupae need to be stimulated to hatch to adults so that this stage can be killed. Vibrations eg vacuuming, carbon dioxide (from expiration of humans/animals), warm temperatures and high humidity stimulate these creatures to hatch and so the adulticide agents in the house spray can then kill the immature adult fleas as they hatch eg permethrin. The last couple of weeks have been perfect for pupal hatching with the rain and warm temperatures. Approximately 10% of the total flea poulation in an infestation is in the pupal stage so they certainly need to be addressed.

Post Indorex spraying we advsie that daily vacuuming is performed for 7 days so that the dormant pupae can be stimulated to hatch and then killed by the adulticide (permethrin, in environment and active for 8 weeks). The pyripoxyfen attacks the juvenile stages (eggs and larvae) and has a duration of activity of 1 year.

Unfortunately it's that time of year again but with correct advice and compliance the fight against these critters can be won!

Usually i explain to clients that it's the life cycle of the flea. I believe the pupae can lay dorment for up to 18months until conditions are right. I think there is ONLY ONE household spray that can actually kill these. Indorex as far as i know doesn't. O have to wait until all have hatched and drank blood to be killed!

However, I have never had a client say this to me. We stock a range of spot ons at work - frontline, advantage, advocate and effipro are the main ones, and I try and help the clients to come to an informed decision as to which product is right for them and their pet. We advise environmental control too, and stock indorex for this.

I had a flea infestation a few months ago and used f/line on the cats, advocate on the pooch, and a liberal spraying on indorex on the house, which worked really well.

I'm not sure what else you can advise your clients - are they definatley using the products correctly? ie onto the skin and not on the fur? Sometimes with very fluffy critters I will clip a teeny patch on the back of the neck to ensure the treatment is applied to the skin, as it can be really hard otherwise!

You could also try phoning your flea tx reps and get their take on things perhaps?

Re: Fleas!

we started having this last year and changed from frontline to advocate- has made a huge difference
