Is homeopathy the same as herbal? Does it work? I just read the whole debate in the vet times and thought I'd see what the differing opinions are.

Re: Homeopathy and herbal

I think it can sometimes help some animals in some cases, but I'm not sure.

The fact that, apparently (so a Vet I used to work with told me) there is a substanstial financial award up for grabs for any homeopathic/herbal practioner who can prove their product works as good as traditional medications, which still hasn't been claimed...says a lot really....

Re: Homeopathy and herbal

Herbal medicine works in the same way as orthodox medicine in as much as a substance is given, in the case of herbal medicine this is a plant, and this has an effect on the system that causes a physiological change in the condition of the patient. The amount that is given has a direct bearing on the effect that is obtained in the same way as any other orthodox medicine.

A homoeopathic remedy is made from a “mother tincture” of the active ingredient and this may be from a plant, mineral or animal source. This mother tincture is diluted many times to provide the remedy. The amount of dilution is indicated by the letters X or C following the name of the remedy. In most cases there is not enough of the active ingredient in the finished remedy to have a physiological effect and homoeopathic remedies are therefore thought to work by stimulating the body’s own healing processes.

I hope this helps.
