A friend of mine has one who is a complete nightmare. He howls and barks all day unless he has his nose in/onto something. She had an outdoor pen made for him which kept him out of mischief for about four days before he worked out how to escape. When he does get out he runs off for miles and mile rather than hanging around the farm where he lives. My gradparents have found him on their farm before now and they live 15 miles away from my friend.

She can't keep him in the house as he's destructive and he'll eat anything he can get his paws on.

A client of ours (1st time dog owner) got one as she thought they look cute. Trouble is, Bella is more of a handful than she realised. Again she's kept outside and does nothing but bark. Again she can't be kept indoors as she's very destructive. Oh, and our postie brought her into us the other day as she was running freely on the road. Blooming dog!

I adore dogs but would I have a beagle? Umm, no I wouldn't

Re: Beagles

Ive had such a laugh reading about everyone's experiences with beagles. Im a beagle owner, he is 6y, ive had him since he was 6months.

What can I say about him.....

His recall was about as good as a chocolate teapot, he ate everything he came across, inside and out. He was a complete nightmare. He couldnt be trusted with anything.

I couldnt let him off the lead at all cause he just wouldnt come back. He'd do the whole - "I know you want me to come back over....but im not gonna come" and then run for miles.

I dont know how many times he stole peoples sandwiches from picnics and made little kids cry because they had no lunch left :(

He was on his own until about 2 years ago when i got a staffie x whippet, now he is the best dog ever! the 2 of them are inseperable, recall...almost perfect, we're working on it. I can let him off the lead anywhere (aslong as there is no road) and he'll generally come back first time. He is much calmer and happier now that I have the other dog.

Its weird how much he has changed in the past 2 years... he used to have to be sedated to have his nails clipped cause he panics, now i can do them at home aslong as the other dog is there!!

dont get me wrong though, hes still got the cheeky side to him and knows exactly how to blame everything on my other dog.

I suppose in answer to your question about getting a beagle...dont!!

Re: Beagles

Hi ive rescued a beagle cross terrier (bad combo i know!!) hes 6 and ive had him just under a year.

i have to keep him on the lead most of the time as he will bugger off chasing a rabbit/squirrel!! his recall is perfect until he sees anything move and he goes into his own little world and ignores me!!!

but he is the sweetest dog in the world at home, very cuddly and calm!!

but as much as i love him!! i must say its a complete nightmare having a dog that you have to constanley watch on a walk and can only be let off at certain parts!!
