Thanks everyone for your replies.

I think perhaps we will trial the evening meetings for a couple of months, and if it doesn't work out then I'm liking the idea of having weekly 'shorter' meetings i.e allocate 20 minutes of vets and nurses diary rather than 2 hours!!!

We have full practice meetings once a month. 1-3, first hour meeting, second hour is CPD. Lunch is provided by the practice/rep. Meeting dates are scheduled months in advance. Everyone has to attend, unless on holiday. Vets and nurses have seperate meetings once a month too, no set length of time.

We have whole practice meetings every three months these are schedulled at the begining of every year and the morning blocked off as soon as the date is decided so that people don't book things in. They last anywhere between 1 and 3 hours depending on what needs to be discussed. Attendance is not compulsory for people who are on holiday night staff etc but all staff are invited and the minutes are then published and put up in the staff room. Because of the number of staff and to prevent them just turning into mass rants we put up an agenda list at least 1 wk before and we ask that anyone who wants anything discussed puts it on there or it doesn't get discussed( sounds a bit harsh but with 30+ staff it could go on all day) in addition to this we hold a 10 min weekly briefing every wed at the end of lunch time just to relay any important info and for people to bring up any burning issues.

we do this too- and they inevitably get cancelled as the vets always keep booking things in. don't pay any attention to the note at the top of the diary stating "keep ops light- meeting 12-1pm" Haven't had one for ages due to this

Sadly it's the same at our place.... you just end up hitting our head against a brick wall!..... Where's Caros head against a brick wall icon????

I try to organise a nurse meeting once a month, usually at lunch time and we mark it on the diary so we can keep ops quieter etc. As we run them so frequently I don't make them compulsory as if you miss one you are usually around for the next one.
I ask the nurses to write any items they wish to discuss on an agenda which means we tend to get through items more quickly and the meetings don't drag.
I write up the minutes and make these available to all staff.
We have held meetings in the evening before but not had great attendance as people, myself included really don't like coming in in their own time. We've also been taken out for a curry for a practice meeting but it was difficult to discuss things as we put on a long table and people were still eating as the meeting started! Ended up being a very long night!!

Have lunchtime meetings mainly with food provided yum yum pizza etc, did work for a practice once that wanted change, i.e computer systmes, rota, etc took us out for a chinese which I felt was constructive but not really able to talk too well as eating and drinking with people around etc, I prefer lunchtime meetings.

We have practice meetings about every 2 months.. we go out for a meal after work in the evening (paid by the vet ) where we have our meeting over dinner.. then either bowling or some other activity.. fun fun fun!! that way all staff are more likely to attend Lol!

We have staff meetings once a month - they are planned from the start of the year and the diaries are all blocked out for said days for emergencies only.

Nurses meeting 11-12noon, Vets meeting 11-12noon, receptionist meeting 12-1pm, and an all staff meeting from 2-4pm.

It works well for us, front doors are closed and a sign put on to say we are in meetings however, the intercom will be answered if it rings and the phone is put to answering machine.

we have practise meeting every six mths, usually hosted bt vets/managers, noone is normall keen as its always at 7pm, in our own time and we dont get paid some of us have to travel a bit so never a full show, sure we would get better attendance if we could persuade them to do during the day, nurse meetings done 3 monthly and norm in pub, again not normally well attended, a shame i know but, hn makes changes and within a few weeks they go back to normal!!!

Vets, nurse and receptionists all have their own seperate meeting every 2 weeks and minutes are given to all in the practice. This is usually done during a quiet spell during the day for half an hr or so. Once every 3 months the whole practice has a meeting, it is at lunchtime, lunch is provided and attendance is compulsory unless on hols.

we hold staff meetings on the last friday of every month, usually held 1-2 lunch provided, we have nurses meetings when needed normally go out to dinner for it normally more relaxed

We had a nurses meeting book, so if you had things to discuss these were written down in the book and then added to the minutes.

We used to have them either on a quiet day or one lunchtime depending on when can be fitted in. Not all members of staff attended as this just wasn't practical. Minutes where always emailed out afterwards to all members of the team. usually every two months or so

WE have a practice lunch once a month in the lunch hour. We tend to book less ops that day for that reason, most staff attend, unless they are on holiday or off from the night shift the night before.

Lunch is paid for by the practice. It works well as long as you manage your op's diary for that day.

We generally do our on a Wed afternoon, which is the practice half day. Attendance is obligatory and we get lunch. Generally they take an hour or so and we try to have at least one a month. Staff don't seem to mind and we're given enough notice so we don't make plans for the extra time - its just the same as staying behind for an emergency except we know about it.

The staff shouldn't be given a choice to attend - enough places don't do practice meetings or give the staff a chance to air their views. The staff should see it as good thing, especially if you are willing to pay for their time.

However I can understand a grumble if it is a large practice and people may have to travel back for the meeting.

How about doing in it a pub or community centre once a month? Away from practice or in some central ground for the staff?

We have a staff meeting at 3pm every Tuesday afternoon. Barring emergency ops running late, everyonme attends with the exception of the receptionist who holds the fort for 40mins. Because we have them so regularly, they rarely run over the alloted time and ensure we all communicate well. Everyone knows that we don't book op discharges during this time and it's such a routine and frequent thing for us that it seems to fit in 99% of the time. Any staff on days off aren't expected to attend but the pm takes minutes which he emails to the entire practice staff later that day/the next day noting what has been discussed and any outcomes/changes to procedure etc. The vets also use it as a time to discuss and unusual or complicated cases with each other. Works for us!
