I think its personal preference, I always put loads of water up and dont stop pumping till i have stuff coming back out (pref clear stuff!)

I do sooooo many as I have to prepare our patients for colonoscopy and not had any probs with the higginson syringe using this logic, the prob comes when people only put a couple of pumps up.....i mean what use is that!!!!

I made a comment the other day on where our (ex NHS) endoscope had been in it's previous life....i was told that was gross!!!

it actually depends what we want to do with the enema, sometimes on the big beasts we use a narrow stomach tube and pour warm water down it, mind you i'm normally doing them for colonoscopies!!!

Have changed from using a Higginson's Syringe to using Fleet enemas! A whole lot less messy!

if all else fails use a urinary catheter and syringe. Not as good as a higginsons but then when needs must!!
