Gald the dog is now on fluids. The fortol is prob the best as it should slip down, but you need to feed from a height and keep the dogs head extended..... so sitting up and extended neck or it's just gonna sit there, why dont they have a feeding tube in?

Re: anaesthetic flow rates puppies?
we had to wait until he had gone to get another vet involved who immediatly reduced the amount of food and introduced fluids
hmmmmmmmm....... i bet this will go down very well with the old man

Re: anaesthetic flow rates puppies?

i dont know yet what the vet has got planned he just keeps talking about the op next week, the poor dog was really ill when i finished on friday, for some reason the vet had requested that we fed her 30ml/hr of fortol but the poor dog just couldnt keep it down, it was just sitting in her oesophagus so she would vomit it back up, then cough, inhale and go all chesty and become dyspnoic. She was also extremely dehydrated but the vet hadnt put her on IVFT for some reason? but because he is the senior partner and an a***hole you cant question him at all so we had to wait until he had gone to get another vet involved who immediatly reduced the amount of food and introduced fluids so im hoping she is ok over the weekend!

Re: anaesthetic flow rates puppies?

Hi Daisy,

your IVFT goes on weight, so it will depend what weight the dog is, and what rate the vet wants it on. op rate is 10ml/kg/hr

Your special considerations for a puppy 12 weeks and under would be , ie there liver is not properly developed so you need to have short acting drugs and anaesthesia.

Pre anaesthetic starvation should be kept to an absolute minimum due to their high metabolic rate, a T piece is best used, dont think there is anything re flow rates, think it is still standard 400ml/kg/min with a circuit factor of 2.5.

Temp should be monitored throughout, and heat sources such as hot water bottles, heat pads should be used, but you prob know that anyway.

Let us know how it goes. BTW what is the dog having done?
