My Cavalier King Charles was diagnosed with heart problems about three weeks ago. He's 11. He was coughing a lot, but eating and exercising fine, so the vet

Re: Cavalier Help?

Glad to hear he's picked up again x

Re: Cavalier Help?

Sorry for the late response, but I thought I'd update in case anyone was wondering.

The vet wasn't at all interested in seeing him, and just told us to keep him at home and prepare for the worst. He said that these things can progress fast, and just to enjoy our time with him.

I started taking him outside once an hour, and getting him to drink when he came in. This seemed to work, and he got a lot better...today he is completely back to normal, and has been for a few days. He's jumping up, running without problems, eating and generally himself.

Thanks for all of your help!

Re: Cavalier Help?

how are things today? - did you manage to contact a vet?

Re: Cavalier Help?

is there no other telephone number on answer machine? is the practice a branch surgery ? - if so would it be worth ringing main practice or is it that their emergencies are covered by an emergency service? I've never had this problem before.

He was scanned three weeks ago, and his heart was enlarged, which was causing his cough. He also had some liquid build up on the lungs. He was put on his tablets, and scanned again around a week ago. His heart was around normal size again, and the vet said the diuretics were working. He wasn't coughing much at all then.

His tablets seem to have kicked in, now. He's asleep, and seems to be breathing fine. His heartbeat is regular, and I can't feel a murmur, but I've never been able too. His brother died of this two years ago...He's nothing like that, though. Nowhere near as bad. It's made me feel really worried, though, I stayed up all night with him.

Re: Cavalier Help?

Ditto the above posts

Re: Cavalier Help?

i agree you should see a vet,

do you know what is causing his heart murmur? ie has he been scanned and xrayed

Re: Cavalier Help?

Thanks both of you.

I'll try phoning again...all I got earlier was that there was no one available.

He's got a grade 3 heart murmur if that's relevant...I'm worried sick. He's asleep right now and he's breathing seems normal but I just want to see someone to be sure...

and if you cant get to your vets at least speak to your vet - they are more likely to be able to advise you knowing the degree of the heart problem . Give your vet a ring and see what they advise

Re: Cavalier Help?

I'd get him to a vet ASAP especially as he has been diagnosed with a heart problem and you can't really wait in a situation like this as he could go down hill very rapidly. Your vet should provide some sort of out of hour cover so phone them and see what they say. Sorry if it's not what you want to hear but better to be safe than sorry. x
