Ultrasonic cleaners are not recommended for cleaning certain items, for example items that have rubber parts will lose performance if subjected to ultrasonic waves. Always check with the instrument/device manufacturer before using a ultrasonic bath as part of your cleaning regime.

Ultrasonic baths create bubbles that impload helping to thoroughly clean jointed or many faceted instruments that are otherwise hard to clean manually, thus being advantages to your infection control programme.

Add detergent, ensuring the manufacturers recommendations are followed, if your tank has a heater ensure that the temperature is comparable to the detergents manufacturer.

Ultrasonic cleaning tanks should only be used if recommended by the device/instrument manufacturer.

I can see how it would damage plated instruments.

I've experience of Aesculap instruments, now about 12 years old, passed through an ultrasonic cleaner and washer disinfector after each use that haven't deteriorated in anyway whatsoever. I guess it depends on the quality of the instruments too.

Re: ultrasonic cleaners

Andy Pound from Animal care, he used to work in the human field prior to coming over to the dark side!!!

Re: ultrasonic cleaners

Interesting, who was the talk by? Was is sponsored by anyone?

They can cause damage with careless and inappropriate use, but human decontamination specialists would still regard them as being an extremely effective cleaning modality. Cleaning of surgical instruments should be given much more consideration than it used to be. If it is not clean, it can't be sterilised.

Fancy one of these, anyone?
