I didn't see the slide so I'm not sure what type. pH was 7.0
Can't use c/d due to age
Anybody know how to manage this?

Re: Kitten blocked bladder

i agree that PTS was probably the best option in this case, i don't think i have ever seen a kitten with a blocked bladder, it kind of suggests that something wasnt right internally or medically especially with the raised blood enzymes too.

Ok you could have kept catherising, sedating, expressing but in the long term it would have been stressful for the kitten, not exactly a good quality of life. Also would cost a fortune over the course of a year.

Re: Kitten blocked bladder

I wasn't saying he should have had the op. Just saying that i've seen diet isn't always the answer. He still went to OOH for bladder probs after his op, poor kitty. *touch wood* he's doing ok atm.

Re: Kitten blocked bladder

yes I agree would never suggest urethrostomy in a kitten of this age, and urethrostomy doesnt cure the problem it only makes it easier to manage sometimes.
sadly blocked bladders are not always easily controlled with diet - one of my old cats Oscar repeatedly blocked no matter what he was fed. He ended up with a urethrostomy which didnt cure the problem but made it less likely he would block and easier to unblock him if it happened again and was still on Rx food. It is so unusual for a kitten of this age to block there must have been a lot more going on?

We have a client with a cat with this problem...despite correct food he still blocked, so he had urethrostomy.

Re: Kitten blocked bladder

sadly blocked bladders are not always easily controlled with diet - one of my old cats Oscar repeatedly blocked no matter what he was fed.
I'm afraid I agree the kitty was prob better off pts not because the client was strapped for cash but because if this condition was occurring at such an early age the kitten may have had lifelong problems requiring careful treatment, and careful monitoring and a fair amount of suffering.

You could say ok rehome it but would that be fair on the kitten, the owners or the new owners? I dont think PTS was an easy option here at all.

Re: Kitten blocked bladder
bloced bladders are easily controled by diet.
Working with cats, I've seen a heck of a lot of blocked bladders, and sadly quite a few are not controlled by diet.

This kitten, to me, didn't sound like your average blocked cat. I've never seen or heard of a kitten blocked at so young.

Very sad

Re: Kitten blocked bladder

I've seen quite a few cats pts because of blocked bladders and mostly because the owner can't afford it. Yes it's very sad but it's better than having a cat who is constantly suffering because the owner can't afford the diets. Most of these cats we have unblocked and sent home but they reblock and then the owners request pts because they can't afford to keep going. Yes people shouldn't get an animal if they can't afford to look after it but it happens a lot and at least you can end that animals suffering even though it is very sad.

Re: Kitten blocked bladder

Agree with Steph, doesn't sound like an 'average' blocked bladder case for something so young.
I disagree, yeah ok if the cat had major problems then yeah ok but bloced bladders are easily controled by diet. We don't euthanise a human because they have too many health problems and cost the NHS too much!! Sorry just my opinion sometime PTS seems like to easy an option!
oh so you know the ins and outs of the case and know that the blocked bladder was from a dietary issue? You sure it wasn't due to a birth defect or internal organ malfunction? surely a kitten that young with that sort of issue has something else going on and surely it would be naive to assume it didn't. at the end of the day everything happens for a reason.

and we don't euthanise humans because it's illegal. but there are many cases which I would argue should be legal, but that's another matter.
