I've used Periactin with varying success- mostly positive

I've had experience of vets using diazapam repeatedly on a depressed cat, despite the nurses requesting them not to. It freaked him out and made him more depressed and anorexic once the effects had worn off. We wanted to get to the route of the problem first instead of just whacking him with drugs!

we use mirtazipine in dogs and it works great, usually start of once daily then go to every 3rd day if needed a bit longer term

cyproheptadine (periactin) is used more in cats with us than in dogs, but it can work.

I would not recommend using diazepam as an appetite stimulant as it has a very short action, yes it will give animals the munchies but then again so will ketamine in cats, however it wont work to try getting anorexic patients eating longer term.

the food enhancer sprays can work as well

The vet will usually give an inj i/v of diazepam for an inpatient to get them to eat - and it works in seconds!!

one of my vets tried that bon appetit stuff on her cat when she got back (normally eats everything she's given) and she refused every flavour of the bon appetit

Diazipam gave my dog a severe case of the munchies - she even ate carrots which never usually did!

The spray stuff is good too and yes the fish one is, well, fishy!!

There's new food enhancer spray, which was being promoted at BSAVA which is amazing. I used it to tablet my dogs at home now - spray it on food or tablet & they munch straight into it. Its called Bon Appetit and is made by MH Veterinary. 3 different flavours and each as good as the other!!!

I have used Periactin in practie and am pretty sure that it worked.
