I'm writing up my practice placement portfolio at the moment. We had a case of an 11.75kg terrier in for spay. Used ACP and Torbugesic as premed, induction with Propoclear (Propofol) and maintenance on Halothane. Just wondering

Re: Anaethesia recovery times
I havnt used halothane for ages - and it is can be very expensive now , more so than iso

think the last time i remember usin g it was @2006
I ain't used it since 2004!!!!! My god how time flies! God your more up to date on something than me Sal

Personally don't think there is a 'standard' recovery time, is dependant on so many factors. Such as was Nitrous used, patient temp (at end of procedure), length of procedure, room temp of recovery area, amount of pain relief on board (ie multi-module / pre-emptive (good idea, but likely to take longer t recover).

We were using thio induction mostly followed by halothane/nitrous so lower % of halothane could be used (unless nitrous was contra indicated). O2 /nitrous ratio of 1:2 and nitrous stopped approx 10 - 15 mins before the expected end of anaesthesia. premed was usually acp/bup or acp/pap depending on the surgery and the animal.

acp/pap premeded animals generally took a longer time to extubation and animals that were cold took longer too - keeping the patients warm really helps with recovery times

Re: Anaethesia recovery times

i havent used halothane in about 3 years.... i thought they werent making it anymore... well in australia anyway, everyone had to convert their vaporizersover to iso. we use to induce with thio, then place them on halothane... lets just say the recovery time was far to long. these patients still had their et tube in for at least 1 - 2 hrs post surgery, they would get cold.. it was just horrible... back in the day :(

Re: Anaethesia recovery times

Would be difficult to say as all patients recover individually no matter what drugs and anaesthetic agents have been given and can have vary time lengths of recovery so dont think anyone would be able to give you a specific answer. Was an anesthetic/hospital chart used that you could look back on?

Re: Anaethesia recovery times

wow- halothane...i used to have a vague idea but now not a clue...it's got a higher MAC than isoflurane (i think) so can be considerably longer than iso as higher concentrations are required.
