I love surgical nursing and being in theatre all day. My job at the moment doesn't offer me a lot of time what I love doing most.
I was wondering if this is the same everywhere or are there places where I would be able to do what I

Re: surgical nursing

Tnx for all your replies

I really do think I have to move on at some point...charity hospital is good for the amount and all the different cases but I just feel that I'm not doing what I love most and that is theatre/surgical nursing...

It's just that plunge... it looks deep and black hole-ish

Re: surgical nursing

[quote user="Phrin SVN"]

I would love to be a a surgical or anaesthesia nurse in a referral practice once I qualify!

I think I must be slightly odd too, as I also quite enjoy 'maintaining asepsis' aka cleaning theatre

Hahaha!! I do find it quite funny how most VNs have their own quirks and neurotic sides!!! I actually could not imagine me without my clean freakyness!!! It drives my other half mad at home

Referral practice is great. Ive only been where I am for 10 months but I totally love it...so happy!!! However, I dont think I could ever go back to General Practice. My work now just gives me so much drive to to further my qualification and be the best I can!!!! Wow, check me and my positive attitude out!!

Re: surgical nursing

I would love to be a a surgical or anaesthesia nurse in a referral practice once I qualify!

I work in an orthopaedic referral hospital. We still do different shifts alternating between surgery and the wards. But when we are on surgery we can be in theatre for hours and do often have the chance to scrub in! I love my job!!! Most of the VN's where I work are more into their surgery/anaesthesia but i'm quite happy with the nice mix of medical and surgical nursing.

It can involve a fair amount of cleaning - (but to me) that's just part of a maintaining a sterile surgical environment. I suppose every nurse has their own loves and hates of the job...and im just a bit of a neurotic clean freak!!!

Have a good look around, maybe see if you could go and have a look around some different practices, hospitals etc. Im sure you will be able to find a great job that you will love xxxx

Re: surgical nursing

i think the RVC have theatre nurse's...keep checking on their website for vacancies

Re: surgical nursing

thank you

I think that that would get a bit boring, and the scrubbing in was done by the student vets.
Rotating is OK as long as it more than just once in 3 months a week in theatre.
I do enjoy other aspects of our job as well though

Spent quite a lot of time in theatre mainly doing anaesthesia, but with the support of anaesthetist normally got some interesting cases and used ventilator which is always a bit exciting. Got rota'd to scrub quite a bit we then had to decide between us and the surgery intern who would scrub for those cases of the day. There is cleaning to do ie between cases and at the end of the day. We had an instrument tech. so she sorted those through the day. Have you seen the job at Glasgow uni? I like surgical nursing too. Best thing to do would be to look out for referral practices looking for surgical nurses. Would agree with steph that you still rotate through different disciplines within the hospital, but not all referral hospitals are run this way Any other information feel free to ask.

I wouldn't say I'm rubbish at it (some might)... but I still have to do... much like the nurses that don't enjoy consulting or kennel have to cover shifts in there. Unlike human nursing - where you can speicialise - there are very few jobs like that in veterinary care, you kinda have to take to good with the bad.
