&lt;p&gt;A cats extremities are cooler which is why they are different colour. If you clip a flank you obv make it cooler as there is not hair to keep it warm and so the hair grows back darker. I have no idea why it only happens in oriental/ exotic breeds though.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Also, If the hair is clipped it disturbs the hair growth, my westie had hair clipped from her scruff for a lump removal and the hair grew back yellow a totally different colour to the rest of her.&lt;/p&gt;
