I tried to take him off it but after 2 weeks of none he became a complete mess.

I do have a nightmare getting the zylkene into him- he currently has milk on his breakfast for him to eat it!!

I have had a brief look into the calm food, but my concern is the amount of food they recommened to feed, and i presume you would have to feed the Recommended amount in order to have a calming effect??

they recommened for my dog whose 10kg 2 royal canin cupfulls- there is no way my dog would eat this much!! he currently has a mug of JWB!!

so think i may just stick with the zylkene!

Re: Royal Canin calm diet

Hahhahahahahaha

Re: Royal Canin calm diet
E.g. The reddness of some birds feathers is due to the amount of antioxidants that they have consumed and the female bird will use reddness as one piece of evidence of how 'fit' the male is.

Yes there is supposed to be something in it to stop that burt orangey coat...., but 25yrs of owning rotties, and guess what I never had a burnt orangey coat yet, and i never fed this diet.., you can get coat changes due to hormones, and this can change the colour as well as the texture, and I know there food does not have something in it to counteract that. Also that burt orangey coat look.... I always get the impression when looking at the dogs that have it, are not a good representation of their breed ...in the looks dept...ie a bit of cross breeding in there somewhere.

A good diet..........ie any diet, regular exercise and grooming will keep most coats(hormones excluded) maintained.

I've never heard of this diet, but then we are a Hills practice!

I have had good results with my own pooch and zylkene though! Although I doubt I would have stuck it out with her if I hadn't been getting it at cost (which is still pricey enough!)

Basically, after showing no fear of loud noises before, she got totally freaked out last bonfire night, and started showing nervous behaviour, hiding, trembling etc at all sorts of things she wans't worried about before - windscreen wipers and 'loud' telly being the main ones. She was on zylkene for about 4 months, and has been off it for about 6 weeks, and seems fine now!

It does take a while to work though! I think its recommended to start about 2 months before firework time at the latest. I'm no behaviour specialist mind - just had good results with my pooch so wanted to share :)

Its also good that its GSL, so doesn't need a vet to prescribe
I used Zylkene for Jack for sudden noise phobia, worked very well He's still a little nervy but 99% better It started when a car drove fast past us and hit a wooden bollard, bits of the car flew off (narrowly missing us) and there was a loud bang. It made me jump out of my skin, so poor little Jack must have been terrified lower down! He then REFUSED to walk near roads - had to get in the car and drive to the forest/beach for every walk! I spoke to my behaviourist, she recommended Zylkene and training tips, now he'll walk fine and cross the busy duel carriageway we cross every day to go to the beach. He does pull away slightly when lorries/boy racers drive past, but it's so much better so i'm happy with what Zylkene has done

Re: Royal Canin calm diet
Both have been trialled and shown to help cats and dogs with stressful situations. I am all for trialing, ...... , but one of the things with the breed specific diet for Rottweilers.... by Royal Canin is ..... it keeps their coat black!!!!!!!!!!!! ...... how the hell do they know that..., sorry but you would have to test a species over a multitude... and I am not talking single figures here....., years for that to be proven.. and it would have to be done under strict experimental procedures.... so are you telling me for each breed specific diet, you have done trials for each breed specific... whether it be disorder, or "coat clolour"?, and where have you kept said animals???? because if it was not within a lab setting, then how the hell do you know that your "trial" was actually under proper experimental conditions? Sorry I am not convinced, I stand by my principles...... reps will sell their soul to the devil for a sale.. and I am not buying it

Re: Royal Canin calm diet

I think i can see where they are coming from - the idea is good but whether it works or not.....

Many owners do believe that certain foods send their dogs loopy - a few well known brands heehee so maybe this is the market they are trying to target?

Re: Royal Canin calm diet

a bit of useless info for anybody that is interested - L tryptophan was used in both ww1 and ww2 as a possible treatment for shell shock and some studies suggest it was sometimes very effective

Re: Royal Canin calm diet
Unless it contains valium, it probably wont! Sorry but I am not convinced with all these gimmick diets!

Whatever next -I wonder what the manufacturers of zylkene have to say about it. I do think there comes a point when too much choice is not a good thing and doesn't this risk self diagnosis to a point as well - not sure how convinced clients would be either.

Re: Royal Canin calm diet

Calm contains 2 ingredients which help with stress - alpha casezpine (the hydrolsyed milk protein) and L-tryptophan. Both have been trialled and shown to help cats and dogs with stressful situations. It can be fed long term

In terms on use of DAP/Feliway they can be used alongside each other, They have completely different actions and can complement each other.

Re: Royal Canin calm diet

LOL yea the whole time thing with vets seems to have been forgotten!Get so many clients wondering why it hasnt worked.....Was discharging a dog just last week and its a really bad traveller so the vet prescribed Zylkene for travelling over to us ......Owner said made no difference and they were quite upset about this so i asked how long the dog had been on it for.........3 DAYS!!!!

Re: Royal Canin calm diet
